Today we begin our final project on China. The country is becoming more powerful every day. At the same time, it is damaging the world’s environment and taking away the rights of its people. For these reasons it is absolutely essential that our representatives in the US government know as much as possible about China. Your job in this final project is to create a VOTER’S GUIDE. This guide will help voters determine if people who are running for office know as much about China as they need to. An actual voter should be able to use your finished brochure to help decide how to vote. Remember, history is only worth studying if it effects the way we live our lives today … in the present. We will create rough drafts of these brochures in class today. You will begin a final draft for homework and finish your final draft in class tomorrow. Let’s get ready to make history. 1. Above and Beyond: On the back of this page, list some qualities that make projects professional. Name: ______Classwork April 5, 2006 History - Classwork #35: Background for Your Voter Guide

China is becoming more and more powerful every day for several different reasons. First, China has the largest population of any country in the world. There are over one billion people living in China. (We will learn in a later unit what the Chinese government has done to try and slow down the growth of its own population.) With all of those people, there are hundreds of millions of workers in China to build things like cars, electronics, weapons, and other goods. Furthermore, China’s army is one of the most powerful in the world. China has strong troops, a swift navy, powerful jet planes, and advanced technology. If a war ever broke out between China and the United States, it is difficult to say for sure who would win.

Because China is so powerful, many say that it would make a great ally (friend) of the United States. However, as we now know, there is much about China that is upsetting. The Chinese are destroying not just their own environment but the world’s as well. The Chinese government--as we saw in the Tiananmen Square Massacre--is still committed to denying its people certain basic rights. People in China still cannot criticize their government openly, vote for their leaders, or practice religion freely.

The leaders of our country must be VERY careful when dealing with China. They do not want to anger the country’s leaders, but we still want China to improve its treatment of the environment and its treatment of its own people. For these reasons, it is critical that our elected leaders KNOW THEIR STUFF when it comes to China!

When you create your voters’ guide, you will focus on two types of elected officials. Adults in this country vote for senators and representatives. Each state gets two senators; ours are Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr (both Republicans). They meet in the Senate. States also get representatives who meet in the House of Representatives. The more people live in your state, the more representatives your state gets. Our representative is G.K. Butterfield We call both the Senate and the House of Representatives by the name “Congress.”

When you prepare your VOTERS’ GUIDE, we will assume that people are about to vote for a senator or a representative.
