INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS PACKET You will complete the three internet activities attached to this sheet…
Learning question: Why do states cooperate with each other? (Key Issue 3) International Relations Investigation United Nations Investigation The European Union. Please do the three activities above in the order in which they are listed. You can either write your findings on a sheet of notebook paper, or you can type out your answers and tables. If you type your answers you MUST have a hard copy printed out before you come to class! When you are finished with the three activities you will staple them together into a packet ready to hand in at the beginning of class Monday, March 28th. Please take your time answering the questions completely and looking at the websites… this information is key to understanding the unit. Below is an outline of what you will need to have in your packet that you hand in on Monday. What you do not complete in class you will need to complete at home. *Please note: this is an individual project* Checklist: International Relations Investigation List of reasons for alliances. Chart/table with researched information on the six organizations. Outline map of the world with headquarters and spheres of influence of each. Answers to discussion questions 1-3
United Nations Investigation Answers to questions 1-13. Complete this on your own paper… be sure to phrase the question in your answer. (Ex: if the question is “What is the purpose of the U.N.?” Do not write the question again… write “The purpose of the U.N. is …) Question 14 requires you to look at info on your adopted country. Hand this in with your packet, but be sure to put it with your adopted country project later. List of headlines from the news center. After you look at the games, answer the question: “How could this help you with the content for your adopted country portfolio?”
The European Union Internet Investigation Answers to questions 1-14. Be sure you read the question carefully and answer all parts… for example you need to create a timeline for question #1. **Be sure to complete the Further Investigation at the bottom, by looking at the EU and the affect it may have on your Adopted Country. List reasons why countries would be interested in forming alliances with each other. (hints: economics, security?) Read your text for this!! (see p. 274-280)
Create a chart with the following four headings: Name of organization Origins (when and why it was formed) Region (what area of the world does this organization cover—some are world-wide) Mission and functions (what are the goals of this organization and what does it do)

On the outline map of the world (the big map you already have), locate and label the headquarters for each of the organizations. For each organization, write an explanation for its sphere of influence. In other words, the United Nations sphere of influence is global—world-wide.
Discussion questions: write down answers 1. Do you think that any of these organizations are universally popular, with complete support from all citizens of member nations? If so, which ones? 2. Why might people have reservations about their country’s membership in such an organization? 3. What are the pros and cons of joining each of these organizations? Click on the link to the UN web site. Using the info from the site answer the following questions. You will need to figure out what links to use to answer the questions.
1. What are the official languages of the UN web site?
2. What is the purpose of the UN?
3. Draw a timeline representing the history of the UN.
4. How is the UN organized? Besides the General Assembly, what are the principal “organs” of the UN? You may use a diagram to show this.
5. What is the Security Council? How does it operate and what is its function?
6. How many member states are in the UN? Which is the newest? How many states were in the original body? How does a state become a member?
7. Who is the Secretary-General? What is his role? How did he assume this position? What other positions of authority are available to individual members?
8. What are some of the issues on the UN agenda?
9. Choose one of the main issues and summarize the UN involvement.
10. Where are the UN “hot spots” around the world?
11. What is the Millennium Development Initiative? Summarize its goals.
12. Choose one of the UN Committees or sub organizations and summarize its function and involvement in current situations around the world.
13. What is Civil Society and NGO’s?
14. Check on your adopted country. Is it a member state? What other “bodies” of the UN is it a member of?
15. Check out the news center. List a few of the ‘headlines’.
16. Check out the cyber school bus and play a few of the games. Check out the web casts, etc. How could this part of the UN site be useful to you? The European Union Internet Investigation
Log in, click on Internet Explorer Go to http://europa.eu/ Follow directions carefully, and answer all questions on a separate sheet of notebook paper or type in a Word document (preferred especially considering some of the messy hand writing many of you have!) 1. How many language translations are available at the EU web site? Open it in English – Go to “About the EU” – you will find all that you need here—it is organized by topics—“basic information” will give you much of what you need to answer the questions *What is the history of the EU? Create a timeline to show this. *Who is the EU? 2. How many member states are there? 3. How many candidate states are there? List them. What is a candidate state? *What does the EU do? What is its purpose? 4. List the nine areas of services and a brief explanation of the objective of each area. 5. Looking at a map of the EU, give the local name for a)Finland, b)The Netherlands, c)Sweden, d)Germany. 6. European symbols: Describe the EU Flag. What is the date of Europe Day? What does it celebrate? *How is the EU organized? 7. What are the organs making up the “institutional triangle” of rule of the EU? What is the basic job or duty of each? 8. What does the Court of Justice and the Court of Auditors do? *What is the Euro? 9. Which members of the EU have chosen not to be a part of the Euro Zone? 10. Look at the map and the conversion tables. 11. The Principality of Monaco, the Republic of San Marino and the Vatican City have a special right under the Euro agreements. What can they do that all other nations cannot?
