North Branford Intermediate School BOE Briefs: June, 2011

 The annual eighth grade class picnic was held at Holiday Hill on Thursday, June 9th.  The fifth grade class, from TVES, participated in an orientation program at NBIS on Thursday, June 9th. The students had an opportunity to meet the sixth grade teachers, tour the building, and learn more about our academic and enrichment programs.  The spring guidance groups are culminating. The social worker and school counselors attended conferences on School Climate and PBIS, including a site visit to a PBIS model school. Developmental guidance lessons were delivered to the 6th and 7th graders. The counselors are currently working on the scheduling process for next year. RTI transition meetings are being conducted in preparation for the upcoming school year. Counselor Cathy Dziekan presented a 4 hour workshop at the CT Counseling Association’s Annual Conference.  Reading Strategies students will be practicing techniques for reading in the content areas of social studies and mathematics.  The fourth and final edition of the Scarlet Banner has been distributed. It has been a successful year. We have had more then ten reporters working diligently on each issue.  The TV Club is producing daily “live” morning announcements and now, with their second teleprompter, the students are able to script the programs to help make the morning show more interesting. Prior to each show, there is a five minute runner, highlighting a variety of topics; including sports, student activities, and patriotic themes. For our first year, there has been a high level of interest, with an average of ten members participating (at any one time) in this after school activity.  The 7th and 8th grade bands and chorus attended the High Note Music Festival on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. This adjudication was followed by time to enjoy the rides at Lake Compounce.  Twelve NBIS students joined the high school band by participating in North Branford’s Memorial Day Parade. Thanks to the support and guidance of band teacher Laura Neville, the students were prepared and enthusiastic about performing with the high school band.  The eighth grade Promotion exercises will be held on Thursday, June 23rd, in the North Branford High School Gymnasium. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. Following the ceremony, the eighth graders will attend their Promotion Dance, at NBIS, from 7:00-9:30 p.m.  Geography teacher Jerry Prell’s students participated in a cultural exchange program, entitled Artlink, which was sponsored by Creative Connections, in Norwalk. One of the seventh grade students had her artwork chosen for display at the Maritime Aquarium. The seventh graders will visit the site on June 23rd, where they will learn more about the artwork exhibit… with a focus on the cultural aspects of the 200 pieces of artwork, which will be on display. These pieces were submitted by students from around the world.  Mr. Burke and his Aeronautics Club will take a field trip to Bradley Airport, the Air National Guard facility, and the Air Museum on June 16th.  Eighth graders Deanna Sintay and Bobby DellaCamera were selected for the CAS Scholar Leader Award, which was presented at a banquet, held at Aqua Turf (June 6th).  The seventh & eighth grade Band and Chorus presented a special concert for the Jerome Harrison students on May 27th.  The Annual Spring Concert was held on May 11th, in the auditorium. The students did a wonderful job performing for two appreciative audiences (5:30 and 7:00).
