Notts AAA Summer League 2014

Summer has arrived and the summer league started off at the new venue of Hexgreave Hall and was superbly organised by Southwell AC. The days leading up to 16 April had been dry and the mixed terrain course of tarmac road, disused rail and bumpy grass provided a challenge especially after the hill and up the last climb up to the finish. Our senior men, led by Andy Norton and supported by aging vets David Oxland, 18th at the age of 62, what a fantastic performance and Colin Palmer, nearer 50 than 40 were third team on the night with 129 behind Redhill RR, 97 and Mansfield Harriers 107. We can easily pull back those lost points with better turnouts at the forthcoming events, the next being local at Holme Pierrepont on Wednesday 7 May.

2 Ken Allen LADIES ROAD AND CROSS COUNTRY

It gives me great pleasure to report this month of more fantastic achievements by the ladies of our squad. The ladies are truly an inspiration.

Midland Road Relays 16.3.14

The road relay season started well for the Notts ladies. Blessed with a lovely day and great running conditions (although some may say a little too warm), the ‘A’ team set a new club record. This is the first time ever that the girls have medalled in the six stage since it started in 2000. Our previous best has been 4th. Due to the change of date, the course was shortened from its usual distance to the course for the four stage. Laura Day had another great race leading the race after her first leg and running the third fastest leg of the day. This race we welcome Margot Gibson from New Zealand to our squad. She is studying at University of Nottingham and we hope that she decides Nottingham is a lovely place to live and work and stays with us!!

‘A’ Team ‘B’ Team Laura Day 14.54 (1) Wendy Kane 21.32 (44) Jenny Reed 16.37 (5) Emma Medina 20.47 (37) Lisa Deacon 16.43 (2) Julie Lambourne 19.38 (31) Hannah Robinson 17.12 (3) Fran Reed 20.13 (29) Jo Finch 16.19 (3) Emma Kealey 22.32 (27) Margot Gibson 15.06 (3) 1.36.51 Rachel Whelan 22.36 (27) 2.07.18

National Road Relays 5.4.2014

The month commenced with the National Road Relays in Sutton Park, again on the shorter course. On the Friday evening, prior to the event, we had not got confirmed an ‘A’ team (because of injuries and illnesses) and were most grateful to Lisa Deacon for agreeing (or having her arm twisted) at the last minute to fill the remaining place. The best our squad had done previously was 14th place and it is fantastic to report, yet another club record for the ladies. Although a little cooler than the Midlands race a few weeks before, this did not deter our ladies and they finished in a spectacular 11th position. Unfortunately, we were unable to field a full ‘B’ team, however, those that ran, all did well. This race saw a debut run from Katja Eravisto and we are pleased to welcome her to our mighty squad! The results from this race were as follows:

‘A’ Team ‘B’ Team

Laura Day 14.45 (6) Katja Eravisto 18.34 (51) Catherin Charlton 16.16 (9) Natalie Chandler 19.16 (45) Lisa Deacon 16.19 (12) Wendy Kane 21.19 (46) Jenny Reed 16.13 (12) Fran Reed 20.00 (46) Jo Finch 16.29 (12) Jo Birtwistle 17.13 (11) 1.37.15

Summer League Race 1: Hexgreave Park 16.4.2014

The first of this year’s races and our attempt to defend both the senior ladies and vet ladies titles. This was a new course – mixture of road and trail terrain, with a large hill about three quarters of the way round the 5.1 mile course. It was a lovely evening and it was great to have so many girls out. Even with London marathon the previous Sunday – Catherine decided to give her legs an easy run and joined us too. We were pleased to welcome another new member – Rhianna Parker-Simpson for her debut Notts race. It has only taken

3 about 4.5 years for Rhianna to come to her senses and run for Notts, needless to say we are very pleased she has joined us. Due to traffic problems, Jo Birtwistle missed the start of the race, but did fantastically well to finish 16th catching most of us up and running past and apologising en route for being late!!!! The results were as follows:-

Jo Finch 32.16 1st Wendy Kane 42.21 77th Rhianna Parker Simpson 34.19 5th Emma Kealey 45.50 104th Jane Pidgeon V50 34.45 7th Rachel Whelan 46.04 106th Aly Wile V35 35.26 12th Laura Boultby 49.29 125th Jo Birtwistle 35.59 16th Senior Ladies: 22 points 1st Catherine Charlton 36.56 21st Senior Ladies B: 335 points 19th Tracey Lack 37.18 23rd Vets Ladies: 40 points 3rd

In between the fantastic team performances, a number of the squad have been competing as individuals and running extremely well.

In the London Marathon, four of the squad took part. It gives me great pleasure – for those who have not heard - to inform you that Amy Whitehead was the first runner for Great Britain to cross the line in the elite race which has given her a commonwealth games place, as she had previously got the qualifying time. In addition to that fantastic performance, Catherine Charlton ran a pb of 2.58.22, Lisa Deacon raced her first marathon in a magnificent time of 3.29.01 and Rachel Whitaker who has not long recovered from a serious illness ran a brilliant time of 4.49.16. Well done girls – you are all truly amazing and a great inspiration to us all.

Belvoir Half Marathon: Hannah Robinson 1.37.33 Tracey Lack 1.39.38

In the Notts Easter 10k, again a number of our squad raced and their results are as follows:

Lindsey Harper 43.53 5th Tracey Lack 46.52 13th Aly Wile (1st V35) 44.01 6th Angela Brown 58.27 111th Katja Eravisto (3rd V35) 45.04 9th

Jenny Reed raced a half marathon on Sunday at Plymouth. She finished in a speedy time of 89.57. Well done Jen.

Congratulations also to Emma Futcher who recently married Ian Winstanley. We send them our love and best wishes for a happy future.

We look forward to our next summer league road race at Holme Pierrepont on Wednesday 7th May. Girls – we need you all out racing. It’s a local race – so let’s flood the race with plenty of green, gold and white vests!!

Keep up the hard work, it has definitely been paying off! Wendy Kane Team Manager
