USGIN-NGDS – www.geothermaldata.org The primary activities this past year have been associated with the AASG National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) project. Significant milestones are:
AASG NGDS formally launched at White House Energy Datapalooza by Sec. of Energy Ernest Moniz on May 28, 2014, recording available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpcStxOq2Ug o 65+ data providers contributing over 9 million records, >47,000 documents, from all 50 states o The only operational system that meets all requirements of the White House Executive Order for the Open Data Access Initiative o The downloadable, executable “Node In A Box” (NIAB) software stack was released and successfully deployed by a number of State Surveys o US DOE turned over NGDS to the AASG project and it is now a USGIN product and asset o NGDS Sustainability Plan submitted and being implemented o International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is streaming NGDS data to the online Global Atlas of Renewable Energy USGIN Foundation Inc. established as non-profit corporation, 501(c)3 status is in progress, with NGDS as its major product USGIN marketing and plan and communications strategy completed USGIN and NGDS are global leaders in geospatial cyberinfrastructure NGDS concept adopted by 117-nation OneGeology consortium as basis for a ‘virtual global geological survey’ providing access to all geoscience data worldwide Arizona Natural Resources Review Council adopted USGIN as the framework for a statewide decision support system
Plans Implement USGIN-NGDS sustainability plan including Solutions Suite marketing; organize White House Roundtable for federal agencies to demo USGIN as Open Data Access solution Improve NGDS CKAN content management system and user interface Establish dedicated servers and repositories at regional server hubs in NV, IL, and KY Enhance NIAB functionality and ease of use through AASG test beds Prototype USGIN as comprehensive data management system with SGS’s Seek new national projects for USGIN: first priority are federal agencies to comply with Open Data Access mandates; next targets are for petroleum, minerals, hazards, etc Seek new financial resources by providing training, consulting, and other services Seek funds from foundations, federal and state agencies, international bodies, corporations Develop NIAB as part of USGIN’s solutions suite (currently have pre-consulting/training, consulting services, and contracted services) and deploy NIAB among at least 6 more SGS’s Continue discussions for broader operational linkages with USGS Community for Data Integration, National Data Repositories consortium (30+ nations), NSF EarthCube (geoscience cyberinfrastructure initiative), Research Data Alliance, Western Regional Partnership (DoD), National Data Service, Foundation for Earth Science,
AASG Action Items AASG make recommendations for Board Members, USGIN Foundation, Inc. Participate in sustainability planning of USGIN and seek new funding opportunities
