Welcome to IB Math SL. This is a rigorous IB math course that will help prepare you for the IB final exam in May 2014. It is extremely important that you work hard in class and work even harder outside of class.

This math course is very different from any other math course you may have previously taken. You will find yourself working harder and at times frustrated. You will be expected to explain your mathematical process and reasoning to not only the teacher, but in an essay format as well. With these challenges it will be extremely helpful to reach out to not only your teacher, but your peers as well. The quicker you can learn and work together, the more successful you will be.

Course Outline . Unit 1: Functions . Unit 7: Sequences & Series . Unit 2: Quadratic Functions . Unit 8: Trigonometry . Unit 3: Exponential & Logarithmic . Unit 9: Circular Functions Functions . Unit 10: Intro to Differentiation . Unit 4A: Descriptive . Unit 11: Applications of Differentiation Statistics . Unit 12: Integration & Its Applications . Unit 4B: Bivariate . Unit 13: Kinematics Analysis . Unit 14: Vectors . Unit 5: Probability . Unit 6: Probability Distributions

Course Requirements

1. Materials  1 ½ to 2 inch 3-ring binder with loose leaf paper  14 dividers for your binders (or you can use my colored paper)  Graphing calculator (TI-83, TI-84, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, TI-nspire)

2. Grading Policy . Tests (50%) . Quizzes (30%) . Homework (10%) . Class Participation (10%) A. Tests/Quizzes – Tests will be given at the end of each unit. You will need to study and prepare for every test. One of the best ways to practice and study for a test is to complete the homework and assignments given. Students must finish their test in class; no extra time will be given unless a student has specific testing accommodations.

B. Homework – I will check homework randomly by collecting homework, homework quizzes and homework checks. I will provide homework solutions in class the next day and go over any questions, but will not spend the entire class period doing so. A student’s responsibility is to try every problem. An empty paper is not a strategy. Remember falling behind has a cumulative effect.

C. Class Participation – Students are expected to come to class each day prepared with notes, homework, pencil, and calculator. Students must be ready to learn and be willing to participate by taking notes and asking questions.

3. Attendance If you are absent from class for whatever reason it is your responsibility to get any missed homework and notes. You are also responsible for turning in any assignments that were due during your absence. Remember to use my website for any missing notes and/or assignments.

4. Assistance Students can receive extra help after school, in the math lab or at evening tutoring. Evening tutoring will be from 3:30 to 5:30pm in the high school library on Mondays and Wednesdays. If none of these times work please talk to me so that we may find an alternative time.

Absolutely no cell phones during class!

Thank you for taking the time to review this material. If any of the following information below has changed from last year, please fill it out and return to me. The quickest way to get ahold of me would be through e-mail. Please have materials and this form filled out by Monday September 9th.

Thank you for your cooperation. I am looking forward to a successful school year!

Sincerely,

Melissa McCumiskey Mathematics Teacher
