THEOBALD OF 13 THE UNITED STATES ARMY WHILE HE WAS SERVING A 14 TOUR OF MILITARY DUTY IN KUWAIT, AND TO EXPRESS 15 TO HIS FAMILY THE PROFOUND APPRECIATION OF A 16 GRATEFUL STATE AND NATION FOR HIS LIFE, 17 SACRIFICE, AND SERVICE. 18 19 Whereas, with deep appreciation, the members of the South 20 Carolina General Assembly honor, on behalf of all South 21 Carolinians, the great sacrifice that the men and women of the 22 United States Armed Forces make for the ideals of liberty and 23 justice so richly enjoyed in this nation; and 24 25 Whereas, born in Pensacola, Florida, Steven M. Theobald was the 26 son of Geraldine Gullette Rabon and the late Martin Theobald, and 27 he called Goose Creek his home; and 28 29 Whereas, he enlisted in the regular Army on July 18, 1975, and 30 served for three years, and then joined the United States Army 31 Reserve on April 26, 1984; and 32 33 Whereas, during his distinguished military career, Staff Sergeant 34 Theobald served a tour of duty in Iraq from 2003 to 2004 and 35 earned numerous awards, including the Army Achievement Medal, 36 two Army Good Conduct Medals, and two National Defense 37 Service Medals; and 38 39 Whereas, in Aprilof 2010, Staff Sergeant Theobald answered the 40 call of his country to serve a tour of duty in Kuwait and deployed 41 with his unit, the 287th Transportation Company; and 42

[662] 2 1 Whereas, on June 4, 2010, at the age of fiftythree, Staff Sergeant 2 Steven M. Theobald gave his life in Kuwait City, Kuwait, after 3 suffering injuries in a military vehicle rollover; and 4 5 Whereas, he left behind his beloved wife, Heike Braun Theobald; 6 three loving children: Jessica, Christopher, and Daniel; his parents; 7 and many other family members and dear friends; and 8 9 Whereas, there is no greater or braver sacrifice for a man to make 10 for his country than to lay down his life; therefore, for his valor, 11 Staff Sergeant Steven M. Theobald received the Palmetto Patriot 12 Award from former Lieutenant Governor André Bauer; and 13 14 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is honored to 15 remember the life and sacrifice of a brave son and hero of the 16 Palmetto State, Staff Sergeant Steven M. Theobald. Now, 17 therefore, 18 19 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 20 concurring: 21 22 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 23 resolution, honor and remember the supreme sacrifice made by 24 Staff Sergeant Steven M. Theobald of the United States Army 25 while he was serving a tour of military duty in Kuwait, and express 26 to his family the profound appreciation of a grateful State and 27 nation for his life, sacrifice, and service. 28 29 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 30 the family of Staff Sergeant Steven M.
