Dusting sulpher was not allowed because of the fire hazard; 2/2/49 Certificate of Airworthiness; 10/27/49 "Aircraft Status Change" form in the aircraft file says registration was cancelled because of an accident. It says "Washout 8/9/49." (The last FAA register info still shows it as a TG-8 even though it was modified to aircraft status. The original Bill of Sale shows it as G-124, Army 43-3118, which is out of sequence and G-124 43-3132 N46489 would be G-110. I'll use the Piper CN since all of its documents show that number but it might be logical to assume that the Army number would more likely be right and that a mistake was made in correlating it to the Piper number. Interesting TG-8 Information

How many TG-8’s? - Various sites identify three additional gliders but nobody gives Piper Construction Numbers - Baugher says that USAAF 43-12499 thru 43-12501 were evaluated by USN as XLNP-1, but he also says that 43-3065, 43-3070, 43-3075 became USN BuNo 36425 thru 36427 for that purpose. See notes below. http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=13205.0 TG-8 - 1942 Piper Grasshopper (Cub), 3-seat glider trainer converion, 250 built - TG-8-PI: Piper Model J-3C-65 (same desig. as per powered O-59/L-4 series) - XLNP-1 - 3 TG-8-PI to US Navy (BuNo 36425-'427), later returned to USAAF -- Note: L-4s also used (power off) for gliding training (Atterbury AAFB) I found this somewhere but didn’t note the source: The XLNP-1 is the Navy/USMC designation for the Army Piper TG-8 training glider. Three TG-8's were given to the Navy and two of those were sent to Marine Glider Group 71 for training and evaluation. The two originally went to MCAS Parris Island and then transferred to MCAS Eagle Mountain Lake. I highly suspect that only 250 TG-8’s were built and that the confusion arises from the three that went to the USN/USMC and then came back to the USAAF and were probably given a new military serial number. I’ll bet that: - G-57 43-3065 became BuNo 36425 (Baugher), and then, if the numbers stayed in sequence, 43-12499 when returned to the USAAF. The FAA file shows that it was an XLNP-1 but shows it as 43-3065, which weakens my argument. - G-62 43-3070 became BuNo 36426 (Baugher), and then 43-12500 when returned? - G-67 43-3075 became BuNo 36427 (Baugher), and then 43-12501 when returned? Per the AWSR 2/7/45 Joe Marrs was high bidder at $301, 1/10/45, at Bush Field. It would be very helpful if that aircraft had been certified and info could be gleaned from the FAA file.
