OPENING REMARKS Ibrahima M. Kalle, Baltimore City

PRESENTATION: Dr. John Byrne, Director and Distinguished Professor of Energy and Climate Policy for the University of Delaware – Dr. Byrne attended the 2009 Global Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was a contributor to the position paper entitled “An Urban Agenda for The New Climate” prepared for the Summit.

Dr. Byrne was the recipient of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Delaware 2009 Sustainability Award. He has contributed to Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change since 1992 and shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize which was awarded jointly to former U.S. Vice President Albert Gore, Jr. and other Climate change researchers. Dr. Byrne co-chairs the sustainable Energy Utility Oversight Board, created by the Delaware General Assembly, and is the architect of this innovative concept for the promotion of energy efficiency, conservation, and distributed renewable energy generation. He has served on the U.S. National Council for Science and the Environment, is a founding member of and served as the first research chair for the International Solar Cities Initiative, and is a co- founder and co-executive director of the Joint Institute for Sustainable energy and Environmental Future.

Dr. Byrne is the author of 17 books and over 150 research articles, is editor of the annual book series Energy and Environmental Policy, and editor for his recent series Transforming Power: Energy, Environment and Society in Conflict (2006) which is divided into three parts: Energy, Environment, and Society and Environmental Justice (2002).

Topics that may be covered include; energy performance contracts, financing, global perspectives on energy and environmental policies, national directions and debunking the energy industry.
