POURED OUT, “For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand…..2 Timothy 4:6.” Being poured out, emptied—this recurring image resounds in Paul’s letters. This is not surprising. Paul was inspired by Jesus who gave fully of himself. No wonder Paul urges the followers of Jesus to do the same. Yet, what a challenging teaching! Who wants to be poured out? Not me. I much prefer being filled to the brim. But I know I’m not meant to hoard what I receive. The kindness someone offers me, I am to share. The time and attention I receive when I’m hurting, I am to extend to another in need. The forgiveness easing my wounded self, I am to pour out to the one asking my forgiveness. Long ago, my novice directress emphasized, “You cannot give what you do not have.” Thus I try daily to restore and refill my emptied self through prayer. That way I have something to give when the time comes to be “poured out like a libation” once again. By Joyce Rupp, O.S.M. HUMOR - A counterfeiter drives to a small town, enters a store, and hands the rube behind the counter an $18 bill. “Mind making change?” he asks. “Sure,” says the clerk. “Ya want two nines or three sixes?”
