Chapter 9 Lesson 3- Classifying Matter

Vocabulary 1. element

2. atom

3. metal

4. periodic table

NOTES

What are elements?

 Scientists call elements the building blocks of matter. o Ex: hydrogen, oxygen, gold, and silver  Elements are made up of atoms.  Metals are shiny, flexible, good conductors.  Nonmetals are dull, brittle, poor conductors.  Metalloids are everything in between metals and nonmetals. o Ex: Silicon  Symbols stand for each element. o Ex: “C”-Carbon, “Au”- Gold

How are the elements organized?

 Dimitri Mendeleev-Russian scientist made the periodic table.  Atomic number-related to the mass of each element.  There are 112 elements.  Rows in table are called periods. Columns are called groups.  Iron, cobalt, nickel are magnetic.

How do scientists use the periodic table?  Bananas have lots of potassium (K).  Fluorine and other elements in its column form salt.
