2. atom
3. metal
4. periodic table
NOTES
What are elements?
Scientists call elements the building blocks of matter. o Ex: hydrogen, oxygen, gold, and silver Elements are made up of atoms. Metals are shiny, flexible, good conductors. Nonmetals are dull, brittle, poor conductors. Metalloids are everything in between metals and nonmetals. o Ex: Silicon Symbols stand for each element. o Ex: “C”-Carbon, “Au”- Gold
How are the elements organized?
Dimitri Mendeleev-Russian scientist made the periodic table. Atomic number-related to the mass of each element. There are 112 elements. Rows in table are called periods. Columns are called groups. Iron, cobalt, nickel are magnetic.
How do scientists use the periodic table? Bananas have lots of potassium (K). Fluorine and other elements in its column form salt.
