Etal-River Till via Tiptoe Farm

Location OS Landranger sheet 74 NT 924395

Start and Finish :- Etal Castle car park 11.26Km ( 7 Miles) 4Hr.

How to get there From the A697 south of Coldstream take the B3653 then left onto the B3654 to Etal. Left into Etal village park in the Castle car park

Start The walk commences from the Etal Castle car park. Walk back towards the village and go left down the road towards the river. Before the river take the gated path to the right.

Follow the path. It leads up and along to meet a minor road. At the road turn left past Tindal house and follow the farm track directly ahead.

Go through a gate and along the side of the wall to a stile.

Over the stile follow the path right across some rough ground, this leads up onto a field margin, go left. Keeping to this direction follow along the side of a couple of fields to a stile hidden to the left at the end.

Follow the field margin steeply down to the riverbank.

The walk can be continued staying on the field margin but there is a lightly trodden path along the riverbank the paths rejoin at a stile. Over the stile the walk comes to a grassy broad track this changes to a woodland track at a gate.

This track soon divides and the walk goes left to again stay on the riverside and finds a shelter we found to be an ideal stop for a break. The walk continues along the riverbank of the Till until the path takes a sharp turn up to the right.

At the top of the bank signs point onwards along the river but our walk takes the grassy track directly onward. This leads to a farm road. The hill seen ahead with trees at the summit is Fadden Hill.

Take the Farm road right past Tiptoe Cottages and onto the entrance to Tiptoe Farm.

The walk goes left, directly east, signed to Tindal House, along a farm track to a point where there is a deviation to the left. At this deviation take the footpath up the side of the field to the right.

Follow this line over the hill it will lead to the minor road at Tindal House. Go right, along to the house to find the original riverside walk path back to Etal.
