COURSE DESCRIPTION :

Students will improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, demonstrating the ability to report on various aspects of American life and culture, using more complex English language patterns.

PREREQUISITES : ESL 012 or as a result of ESL placement test.

Students will improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, demonstrating the ability to report on various aspects of American life and culture, using more complex English language patterns. “Community and Workplace”; Critical Thinking.

GRADING STANDARD :

Testing will be done as follows:

 5 Verb Quizzes 20 Points each 100 Points

 4 Dictations 10 Points each 40 Points

 Mid-term Exam:

Written 75 Points Composition 25 Points

HOMEWORK

(Must be completed ON TIME to receive full credit)

 8 Writing Assignments 10 Points each 80 Points (3 “in-class”)

Your instructor will give you directions on how to complete these homework assignments.

Attendance and Punctuality 30 Points

It is very important that you attend every class session. Being late twice, counts as 1 absence.

CLASS PARTICIPATION 30 Points

This grade is based on your willingness participate in group activities and individual interactions in class. If you are absent, you will also lose participation points for that class.

FINAL GRADE

Your final grade is based on the number of points you have received, provided that you have passed all 3 parts of the final exam. Any student who receives a D on 2 or more parts of the final exam will receive a D for the course, regardless of other points accumulated and will NOT be allowed to continue to the next level of ESL.

Your final grade will be calculated as follows:

A = 90% - 100% = 526 - 585 points B+ = 85% - 89% = 487 - 525 points B = 80 % - 84% = 468 - 486 points C+ = 75% - 79% = 438 - 467 points C = 74% - 79% = 409 - 437 points D = 65% - 69% average on any part of the final exam F = Below 65% average on any part of the final exam

PASSING THE COURSE

In order to progress form ESL 203 to ESL 204 you must pass ALL 3 PARTS of the Final Exam.

The Final Exam consists of: 1. an oral interview with the instructor 2. an in-class composition 3. a test of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar

You may take ESL 022 with a minimum Final Test average of C. If you receive a grade of “D” or “F” on 1 or more parts of the Final Exam, you may NOT continue to ESL 022.
