Information for Applicants

Thank you for expressing an interest in this post within our Physical Education faculty. I hope that you will find the following information of use. As a successful faculty we are proud of the fact that we are a strong, experienced group of subject specialists that support each other on a daily basis. Relationships between staff and students are excellent, as is discipline within the Faculty.

Staffing

There are currently 5 full time specialist teachers teaching Physical Education to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Technician support is provided by a part time former member of the faculty who works predominantly to develop primary links and swimming.

Curriculum

Key Stage Three Throughout year 7-9 pupils receive two hourly lessons of PE. Pupils study invasion and striking games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and fitness activities. The department recognizes the value of a full unit of work incorporated into the curriculum for Health Related Fitness. Key Stage Four In year 10 and 11 pupils receive two hours of core PE and can also opt to study the GCSE PE Edexcel course or the BTEC Certificate in Sport. Pupils can opt for activities such as; Athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, trampoline, football, rounder’s, table tennis, fitness, weight training, squash swimming

Accreditation at KS4 GCSE PE The faculty follows the Edexcel syllabus. At present we have 35 pupils following the GCSE PE course in Yr11 and 30 in Yr10. Usual cohorts consist of 35-40. In September GCSE PE will be delivered to Yr 9 pupils for the first time in a new 3 year KS4. Pupils are assessed in a wide range of activities inside and outside of school including: Football, netball, hockey, basketball, fitness, badminton, athletics, rounders, swimming, personal survival, trampolining rugby union, golf, gymnastics, squash, cricket, karate, judo, tennis and dance. GCSE PE results are very good 83% A*- C in 2012. Exceeding the national average of 70% A* - C.

BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport qualification is offered to those pupils who wish to follow the Sports Pathway and prefer to learn in an assignment based way. At present we have 31 pupils following the BTEC course in year11 and 11 in year 10. In September BTEC PE will be delivered to Yr 9 pupils for the first time in a new 3 year KS4. These students will be following the new BTEC First Award in Sport. BTEC results are excellent 100% A*- C in 2012 this exceeded the target of 87%. On average students following this course achieves one and a half GCSE’s better than in other subject areas.

Junior Sports Leaders Award During core PE time, pupils at year 10 & 11 are given the opportunity to study the Junior Sports Leader or Dance Leaders Awards administered by the CCPR for which the school is fully accredited to teach. The faculty sees this as an extremely valuable certification which will aid the pupils who are particularly interested in a career in leadership or sporting activities.

Extra-Curricular Activities The department offers numerous amounts of extra-curricular opportunities with clubs running before school, at lunchtimes, and after school. The department sees extra-curricular sport and activities as a fundamental aspect of the growth of the whole child. To see young people growing in physical skills, self confidence and self worth is a truly enriching experience. Nowhere in school is it more evident that in PE. The department prides itself on offering a wide range of activities and its success in inter-school competition. Boys and Girls Football, netball, hockey, basketball, fitness, badminton, athletics, rounders, swimming, personal survival, trampolining rugby union, golf, gymnastics, squash, cricket, karate, judo, tennis and dance. The school competes in local borough competitions, Greater Manchester Competitions and English schools competitions with great success.

Accommodation & Resources

The faculty is well equipped and all facilities have recently undergone refurbishment as a part of the schools PFI investment. The faculty has full use of the community facilities which are managed by Grosvenor Facilities Management.

The faculty accommodation includes:
