Dear Parent or Guardian:
This letter is to inform that your child,______, will continue to participate in our sheltered English immersion (SEI) program for the 2014-2015 school year. In the program, your child receives English as a second language (ESL) support from a certified ESL teacher.
Your child’s ESL teacher, SEI teachers, the school team, and both informal and formal testing results indicate that your child current level of English proficiency is ______.
Be assured that your child will continue to receive direct instruction in English by a teacher who uses a variety of instructional strategies to support your child’s learning. In addition, your child will receive English as a second language instruction during the day to support and strengthen his or her English skills so that he/she will be successful in school.
Next January, your child will be tested with the ACCESS for ELLs English Language Proficiency Test, required by the state to assess student’s progress in acquiring English. Your child will exit the SEI program (no longer receive ESL support) once he/she meets most or all of the following criteria:
. Receive a score of Level 5 on ACCESS; . Classroom teacher/ESL teacher recommendation based on student classroom performance and grades; and . Success in school and other standardized tests such as MCAS.
Should you wish to apply for a waiver to decline ESL services, please contact your child’s ESL teacher, ______.
Please know that we continue to work hard to improve our program in order to best support your child’ academic success.
Sincerely,
