Oriel College Gym

Code of Conduct

Oriel College is one of the few Oxford colleges to possess its own gym facilities separate to those at Iffley Road. The college gym is thus a valuable asset and should be treated as such. Responsibility for the gym’s condition is shared between users, students, staff and respective maintenance contractors. Users of Oriel gym must therefore abide by the following code of conduct and be aware that user safety, the gym’s continued existence and any future financial investment in equipment is dependent on the college population respecting the facility and abiding by the following rules.

1. While every effort is made to make the gym clean and safe, users train in the facility at their own risk.

2. All users must have had a gym induction from the qualified staff at Iffley Road, the Oriel college boat club or from the gym committee’s induction sessions prior to first use.

3. Do not train in the gym alone, especially when using free weights.

4. Please wipe down all equipment after use with the paper towels provided and place them in the bin provided.

5. Do not leave empty drinks bottles or other litter in the gym, use the bin provided.

6. Any clothing left in the gym may be removed and placed in the ‘Lost Items’ container in the second quad laundry room.

7. Upon finishing with free weights please break them down and replace plates on the weight tree and the barbells in the barbell holder. Do not leave loose plates or bars on the floor.

8. Do not wipe your hands on the walls and please check your trainers are not carrying mud into the gym facility.

9. Owing to frequent incidents of flooding, the drinking water tap has now been sealed shut. Please do not attempt to use it, but bring your own water bottle.

10. Please be respectful of those resident in the flats above when playing music and entering / leaving the gym. Excessive noise may result in the Dean closing the facility for a period.

11. Any accidents, injuries or incidents should be reported promptly to the lodge.
