AVI3M: Up Close and Personal Georgia O’Keeffe inspired artworks

Task: Create a painting of a flower or vegetable in the style of Georgia O’Keefe.

Expectations Students will: * effectively use the elements and principles of design when choosing the composition * effectively use a variety of watercolour techniques in addition to glazing

Part 1 Procedures:

1. Look at the work of Georgia O’Keeffe and discuss the use of cropping down the format and looking deep into the flowers for the composition.

2. Make contour studies of a flower/vegetable or groups of flowers/vegetables. After you draw the contours crop the image with a ruler so that the background or negative space is reduced. You might choose to have some areas extend beyond the border (see example on the right). Student example Specific requirements: do a minimum of 1 contour drawing of the subject and then do a minimum of 3 contour drawings cropping the image a different way each time.

3. Stretch your watercolour paper. See teacher for details.

4. Transfer the best composition onto watercolour paper using a non-photo blue pencil or a watercolour pencil. Keep the lines light.

5. On scraps of paper, practice some of the watercolour techniques.

6. Get started. Make sue you use many layers of color to bring out the transparency of watercolor.
