Spring Is in the Air and My Favorite Part Is All of the Seasonal Food. with Spring Break

How Much Strawberry Pie will I get?

Spring is in the air and my favorite part is all of the seasonal food. With Spring Break and Easter right around the corner, on my mind most is Strawberry Pie. To get a head start on the season, I baked a 9 inch round strawberry pie last week. I let my husband cut the portions of the pieces and this is what he came up with below. The recipe I followed says the pie contains a total of 320 calories!

There are 5 people in our family… Dad, Mom and 3 kids. The portions of the pie were cut in relation to the age and size of the person. For example, my husband receives the largest piece, I receive the next to largest piece and so on. I am curious as to how much crust, total pie and amount of calories each person in our family will be consuming. Please answer the questions and fill in the chart below.

 Amount of crust - This is found by finding the arc length (follow the formula on page 653). Remember the pie is 9” which represents the diameter. Answer is in inches – round to the nearest tenth.

 Percent of the Pie – found by taking the central angle and dividing it by the total degree of the pie (hint – the pie is a circle shape) – give your answer to the nearest percent

 Amount of calories – found by taking the total calorie amount times the percent of each portion. 1. Find the circumference of the pie. Round your answer to the nearest tenth. (1 point for correct circumference work for the pie)

2. Complete the chart below.

A b C d Person Central Length of crust Percent of the pie Amount of calories Angle (see page 653) (see page 658) (c ∙ 320 calories) a / total measures of central angles of a circle Dad 120

Mom 90

Kid #1 75

Kid #2 45

Kid #3 30

Totals for each column (add vertically in each column)

3. Does the total amount of crust eaten equal to what the circumference of the pie is? (1 point for correct reasoning)

4. Are the portions fair? Why or why not? (1 point) Rubric –
