State Float Requirements

One of our final Social Studies projects of the year is the state float. A state float is a shoebox (decorated upside-down just like a float in a parade, or decorated inside), that will contain information and facts about one of our country’s fifty states.

Below is a list of required items to be included in your state float. These items may be 2-dimensional (drawn, photographed or printed from a computer). They may also be 3-dimensional objects that are hand-made by the student, such as a clay pineapple for Hawaii; or poppies made from yellow and orange tissue paper for California; manufactured such as a plastic orange for Florida; or real such as a potato for Idaho.

The float must include the following items: 1. Name of state 2. State flag 3. A map of the state 4. Something that your state is famous for 5. State nickname

You must also pick at least two of the following to include on your float: 1. State flower 2. State tree 3. State bird 4. State animal 5. State symbol 6. State industry (How does your state make money?)

Students should do most of the research and work necessary to complete this project, but families are welcome to help and provide support.

The project will be graded by using the following criteria: - Did the student follow all directions described on this sheet? - Is this project neat? - Does the project show that the student put forth his/her best effort? These floats will be on display on the stage. For fun, we will have the students judge the floats in the following categories:  Most creative  Most colorful  Funniest  Most informational
