As an Air Force Musician you are employed to perform in one of two bands providing music for Air Force ceremonial occasions, parades, guards of honour funerals etc. You will assist in promoting the image of the Air Force throughout Australia and overseas by performing a variety of music to audiences ranging from school children through to pensioners. Musicians are required to perform in a marching band, concert band and various smaller ensembles depending on their individual abilities. They must be prepared to perform in operational and peace keeping environments in support of Australian Defence Force troop morale initiatives. This requirement dictates a need for all musicians to be trained to an acceptable level of combat readiness.

Pay and allowances: Once you finish your initial military and job training you will earn a minimum of $36,000pa. Plus you get the added benefits of free health care, excellent superannuation and subsidised food and accommodation.

Entry requirements: You must be at least 17 years of age, and must be either an Australian citizen or hold Permanent Residency status. Additional age, medical and fitness guidelines may also apply.

Education requirements: You must have completed Year 10. You must be proficient in one or more of the prescribed instruments or voice; pass an instrumental/vocal audition at the equivalent standard of the AMEB Associate Diploma level or higher, be able to perform as part of an ensemble under direction and be able to sight read at a professional standard. The audition will be before a board comprising of band personnel and chaired by either the Director of Music or one of his deputies. A pre audition tape must be submitted and approved prior to a face-to-face audition being held. A comprehensive CV should also accompany the audition tape.
