Creating an Annotated Bibliography of a Diverse Text Set

A diverse text set is a collection of resources from different genres, media, and levels of reading difficulty that are designed to support learning among readers with a range of experiences and interests. A text-set collection focuses on one concept or topic and can include multiple genres such as books, charts and maps, informational pamphlets, poetry and songs, photographs, non-fiction books, websites, magazines, almanacs or encyclopedias.

Your annotated text set will include multiple and different texts at varying reading and interest levels for middle or high school students in the content area within which you will teach. In total, it will have a minimum of ten (10) texts from four different categories.

1. To introduce your text set, please begin with a paragraph that describes the context of the class for which this collection of resources is intended. What is the grade level, content area, topic/unit of study, and ability level of students?

2. Next, list each text in your document separately. Each annotated item in your list must include the following information:  The complete citation for that text (Use APA format, a summary of which can be found at http://www.lib.usm.edu/~instruct/guides/apa.html  A brief summary of the text  A rationale statement indicating why you selected this text to be part of this text set (e.g., “I selected this text because _____”).  A brief statement about how you would ask students to use the text (e.g., purpose for reading)  If the text is less than five pages, please include the actual text as part of the packet that you hand in. Attach it to the end of your annotated list in order and number it in the top right corner to match the numbered item in your list.

3. At the end of your annotated list, write a brief paragraph about how you would use all of these texts together in the classroom to foster learning about your topic. Would all students read everything?

4. Write at least two objectives that summarize what you hope students will learn as a result of reading and interacting with the texts you have selected.  One content area learning objective (use the national or state standards to guide the selection of these objectives)  One reading strategy objective (use the Rhode Island Grade Level Expectancies for Reading Grades 5-12 and write out the number and the definition)

D. Instructional Resources (At least 1)  Quality lesson plan found online or offline  Professional association’s resource related to the topic  Website to enrich a teacher’s background knowledge about the topic  Journal article with research-based examples of how to teach this topic/unit of study
