MEETING MINUTES – February 15, 2013

At 10:06 Kay Brodbeck, Chairman, gave a welcome and called the meeting to order. The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. New members were recognized:  Kip Wills – FMCSA  Connie Rosarge – Jackson Co SO  Alex Cantrell – DREAM  Z’Kera Sims – DREAM  Rusty Miley – MSU

COMMITTEE REPORTS  Law Enforcement Committee member, Justin Holifield, Florence PD, went over LEL Schedule thru March. These can be found at www.msstorm.org Training and Event news.  Occupant Protection Chair, Mike Hughes, Mississippi Safe Kids, 601-815-6212. Child Passenger Safety Tech Courses: at Pearl PD 3/9 & 3/22 additional info can be found at cert.safekids.org also Batson Hospital safety fair will be held at Ag Museum March 2 and MDOT Safety Fair at Trademart April 6.  Alcohol/Drug Countermeasures Chair, Shantay Griffith, MADD reported on success of “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and the Power of Parents and pledges to drive sober. She also encouraged everyone to attend MADD train the trainer workshops – Parent Talk 21 so you can go to local schools and talk about the dangers of underage drinking and impaired driving. Felicia Williams, MS Delta Impaired Driving Convention Initiative reported on success of “Drive Sober or get Pulled Over” cup coaster collaboration with Garfield’s in Greenville.  Legislative Committee Chair, Molly Miller, Attorney General’s Office, [email protected] , 601-227- 2100: reported that there are currently 14 bills related to traffic, and drivers licenses. All the radar, seat belt, and texting bills are dead. See website for details. http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/2013/pdf/mainmenu.htm  Youth Committee Chair, Tawni Basden, DREAM encouraged us to check out dream.org and put “Teens on the Move” on our calendar for April 11. Let her know if you are interested in being in Flashmob.  Data and Evaluation Chair, Robert Hancock, OHS reported that traffic fatalities for the state are down to 585 for 2012 this is the lowest in over 40 years. Alcohol related fatalities were 123. He also talked about e-site program & updates to crash reporting forms, GPS input and dada cleansing.

OLD BUSINESS Membership registration forms are available, also please let us know of email address changes. NEW BUSINESS Shirley Thomas, OHS Director said Grant applications for next year are due by March 29; grant training dates are: Feb. 20, 21, 27 and 28 in Starkville, DeSoto Co., OHS, and Gulfport respectfully. Please plan to attend training for new grants or continuation of existing grants; also read Assurances and Certifications as there have been some changes. Steve Coleman, department attorney, gave guidance on lobbying activities. Appointments to the nominating committee were made: Darlene Murphy, MS Dept of Mental Health and Joel Spellins, Sherman PD.
