Materials: Computers, LCD projector, 1 sheet of poster board per 2 students, Markers, Construction paper, and other art materials to enhance advertisements
Focus/Review: The teacher will explain to students that they will be meeting a lot of famous people today. The teacher will first ask students to name any celebrities/famous people they know of. The teacher will write student responses on the board.
Statement of Objective: Students will create a visual advertisement of a famous person by choosing a wax figure from selected pictures and researching the person for important information about their lives.
Teacher Input: The teacher will begin the lesson by showing multiple slides of pictures of famous people from the wax museum. The teacher will name all of the wax figures. The teacher will also be assigning a group of two students to each of the famous people. The teacher has predetermined groups.
Guided Practice: The teacher will explain the advertising assignment. The groups will pretend that each of their famous people are coming to their school. To prepare for their visits, each group must create a visual advertisement for their person so everyone in the school will know something about the famous person before they actually arrive.
The teacher has already searched the Internet and found two websites about each of the famous people.
The teacher will also show slides of various advertisements from New York City. (i.e. broadway shows, businesses, movies…) The teacher will use the slides to explain what criteria make for an appealing advertisement. Independent Practice: The teacher will now take all students to the computer lab for research. Each group will be given a sheet of paper with the two listed websites that they are to go to. The groups will read the information from these cites and write down essential information for their advertisement.
When a sufficient amount of time has been given for research, the students will return to the classroom. Each group will be given a sheet of poster board. They will now use various materials to create an appealing advertisement.
The next day each group will present their advertisements to the class. The class will also evaluate each advertisement for it's creativity and appeal. The information used to make the advertisement is just as important as the visual appeal.
Closure: The teacher will gather students on the carpet to discuss their "new profession" as "advertising executives."
