A little history The East Surrey Morris side was formed in 1926 and East Surrey Morris Men was one of the six sides that founded the Morris Ring in EAST SURREY 1934. Duncan Lorimer (Squire) Telephone 01883 717884 We perform dances mainly from the Cotswold MORRIS MEN traditions in sets of six or eight men. A jig danced by Clayton Francis (Bagman) one or two men may be included in the programme. Those that have benefited in recent years include; Marie Curie Cancer Care, Diabetes U.K., Macmillan Cancer Relief, The Royal Marsden Hospital and St Raphael’s Hospice.
The origins of Morris dancing are uncertain. It is clear from contemporary accounts in 15th Century England that, at that time, it was considered an ancient and primitive activity. By the 19th Century the dances had developed into the form we know today. Most Cotswold villages had a side dancing their own subtle variations and it was Cecil Sharp who collected many of these dances around the turn of the century, before the drastic social changesIf of you the early 1900’s enjoy; could sweep away the traditions.
