Natural Resource Management Internship

The U. S. National Park Service National Capital Region Natural Resources and Science

The U. S. National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Region (NCR), Office of Natural Resources and Science (NRS) is seeking a graduate level student intern to assist with resource management projects in 13 national parks in the Washington DC area. We anticipate that the internship will begin in May of 2014 and continue into August 2014. Duty station will be the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE) in Washington, DC.

The intern will work closely with Carol Pollio, Chief of Natural Resources and Science, and will perform various office / field / lab / other work area tasks related to natural resource management. The intern will collect data, including measurements and analyses; and will maintain computer records and databases. The field tasks will be performed in remote and urban locations requiring both attention to safety and excellent field biology skills. Candidates should be comfortable working in a variety of field and/or lab conditions for long hours. Applicable skill sets include a broad range of interdisciplinary hydrology, aquatic ecosystems, and geoscience, climate models, dynamics, and communication. The intern will develop familiarity with the resources of eastern National Park units, NPS management policies and guidance, and NPS data systems. The intern will gain experience translating science into management.

NRS is based at the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE) in Washington, DC and coordinates monitoring and science based management of natural resources found within the 13 parks of the National Capital Region. NRS programs include wildlife, integrated pest management, vegetation management, exotic plant management, inventory and monitoring network, aquatic ecology, and the urban ecology research learning alliance.

Students must be enrolled in spring and fall semesters of 2014 in a degree program. The position will be a GMU paid internship.
