Instructors: Mrs. Rood [email protected] (ext. 2408) and Mr. Hastie [email protected] (ext. 2409) offices located in the locker room of the purple gymnasium.

Course Objective: Fitness is essential for the healthy development of our students and the community as a whole. The well being of our students will largely determine the quality of life they will have. To thrive in our ever-changing world, our students will acquire and use knowledge, skills and habits necessary to promote personal fitness. Cardiovascular fitness and ways to assess individual fitness will be stressed.

I. Class Routine: A. Physical education class meets 3 days in the 6-day cycle. B. PE classes will meet every other day during a six-day cycle for one semester. Many students will wrap this class around Health class.

II. Fitness Requirements: A. Appropriate attire will be required in order to participate in class activities. This consists of a clean, full length T-shirt, properly fitted shorts, socks and sneakers. All sneakers must be tied during fitness sessions. Students are required to change for physical education. B. Showers are recommended at the conclusion of class. C. For safety purposes, jewelry, gum, drinks, or food of any kind are not permitted in the gymnasium or the fitness center. All bottled drinks should be purchased before or after the bell rings, not during class time. D. Do not bring valuables to class. The fitness instructors will not be responsible for the student’s personal possessions. The locker rooms are equipped with gym lockers. Be sure to store your clothing and valuables in the locker and lock it before leaving the locker room. The PE staff does not provide locks. Following the school policy, cell phones are not permitted. E. Students are encouraged to actively participate in all classes. Students are responsible for all the information they miss during an absence or a trip. If a student happens to be absent or unprepared, the following makeup policy will apply: 1. If a student accumulates absences/excuses, he/she owes one make-up class for every two classes missed. 2. All unprepared classes must be made up. No freebies! 3. Medical or parental notes must be taken to the school nurse prior to class for an official gym excuse. If this procedure is not followed the excuse will be honored, however the class will be considered an unprepared. 4. The classroom teacher, on an individual basis, will handle adapted or long-term illness students. Written assignments will substitute active participation if necessary. Active participation is encouraged whenever possible even if it is restricted. F. Class participation is the basis of your physical education grade. Each student must be prepared in order to participate. All unprepared classes must be made up. A student will only receive full credit for the first make-up class. Any additional make-up classes as a result of being unprepared will only receive partial credit. Familiarize yourself with the set make-up dates. G. IF A STUDENT ACCUMULATES 5 UNPREPARED CLASSES WITH NO ATTEMPT TO MAKE UP THE CLASSES, HE WILL BE WITHDRAWN FAILING FOR THE SEMESTER. H. Unexcused absences or class cuts will not be tolerated. This will result in a permanent loss of 25 class participation points for that marking period. I. All accidents, injuries, allergies, or anything limiting complete participation should be brought to the attention of the teacher in charge. If the student is limited in his everyday activities, a doctor’s excuse is required. III. Grading: A. Physical Education is a requirement of all high school students.
