MCLEOD, SR., OF PINEWOOD ON 14 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 2004, AND TO CONVEY THEIR 15 DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY 16 FRIENDS. 17 18 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply 19 saddened by the death of Eugene Belton “Gene” McLeod, Sr., of 20 Pinewood, at the age of eighty-four; and 21 22 Whereas, born in Clarendon County, Mr. McLeod was the son of 23 the late Jacob Lawson McLeod and Elizabeth Beard McLeod, and 24 he was educated in the Manning public school system; and 25 26 Whereas, a member of Pinewood United Methodist Church, Gene 27 McLeod served on the church council for many years in various 28 positions, and he was also a commissioned officer in the United 29 States Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater 30 of Operations, earning the rank of major; and 31 32 Whereas, after the war, he settled in the Pinewood area, where he 33 farmed, owned, and operated a dairy and cotton gin, and he was 34 also the founder of Sumter Dairies, Excello Mills, and Ag-Rotor; 35 and 36 37 Whereas, a founder and major stockholder in Young’s Food 38 Stores, he was an entrepreneur who brought a variety of industries 39 to the Sumter area; and 40

1 [5105] 1 1 Whereas, Mr. McLeod first married the late Sadie Fair Aycock 2 McLeod and then married Nancy Evans McLeod who survives 3 him in Pinewood; and 4 5 Whereas, one of his greatest loves and lifelong endeavors was 6 serving as a member of the National Resources Conservation 7 Service Commission for fifty years where he led the restoration 8 project for the Pocotaligo Swamp; and 9 10 Whereas, Gene McLeod received many honors throughout his life 11 including the South Carolina Outstanding Conservation District 12 Commissioner Award and the Order of the Palmetto, the highest 13 award given by the Governor of South Carolina; and 14 15 Whereas, he is survived by his wife of Pinewood, five children 16 including our friend and colleague, former State Representative 17 Eugene Belton “Mac” McLeod, Jr., four stepchildren, and a 18 number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, twenty-three 19 grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and stepchildren, and 20 eleven step-grandchildren; and 21 22 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply 23 saddened upon the death of this truly fine man and extend their 24 deepest sympathy to his wife, Nancy Evans McLeod, and to his 25 family and many friends in this time of sorrow. Now, therefore, 26 27 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 28 concurring: 29 30 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 31 Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon 32 the death of Eugene B. McLeod, Sr., of Pinewood on Wednesday, 33 March 31, 2004, and convey their deepest sympathy to his family 34 and many friends. 35 36 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 37 his widow, Mrs. Nancy Evans McLeod of Pinewood. 38 ----XX---- 39
