They Are All Uncomfortable, Painful, Cold

Frankenstein (Pgs. 34-38) Chapter 6

**A tragedy is a story that ends in the downfall of its main character and arouses pity or fear in the reader. It also expresses a tragic view of life- the idea that a noble person inevitably brings on his or her suffering or death through some failure or error. As you continue to read Frankenstein, think about whether the novel fits this definition of a tragedy.

1. The creature recounts what has happened in his life since Frankenstein abandoned him. Use the chart to record his main experiences as well as his thoughts and feelings about them.

4. How does the creature get to know the family who lives in the cottage?

He watches them through a hole in the shed

5. Why is he drawn (attracted) to the family?

They are caring and kind towards one another.

He is learning what a family is like and he wants to have that b/c he is alone.

7. How do the villagers’ reactions and his view of his own face affect how he sees himself?

He is terrified, ashamed and full of sorrow about how he looks

8. How does the creature try to reach out to the family in the cottage?

He does favors for them- clears the snow and provides wood for the fire. 9. What is he hoping will happen between him and this family?

He is hoping that they will be appreciative of the favors he is doing and will ask him to be a part of their lives. He is hoping that his kindness will be looked on with gratitude.

10. Hope is defined as: the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best. Is hope important in life? Why?

It’s important for people to feel hope. It’s what challenges us to do things, to be positive and confident and to move forward.

What happens when hope is lost? What does it do to people?

People stop trying, they get depressed, they can hurt themselves
