They Are All Uncomfortable, Painful, Cold

<p> Frankenstein (Pgs. 34-38) Chapter 6</p><p>**A tragedy is a story that ends in the downfall of its main character and arouses pity or fear in the reader. It also expresses a tragic view of life- the idea that a noble person inevitably brings on his or her suffering or death through some failure or error. As you continue to read Frankenstein, think about whether the novel fits this definition of a tragedy.</p><p>1. The creature recounts what has happened in his life since Frankenstein abandoned him. Use the chart to record his main experiences as well as his thoughts and feelings about them.</p><p>Experience Thoughts and feelings Discovered his senses: saw, felt, heard, and He was like a newborn baby; confused and smelled at the same time. scared</p><p>Experienced cold, heat, hunger Had to fend for himself; didn’t know what to do; ate acorns and berries</p><p>Discovered fire Was happy because he was warm, but then burned himself</p><p>Discovered that he couldn’t just go into Found a village and saw food- tried to take someone’s home and take what he wanted- some from a cottage people feared him and hurt him- felt rejection and isolation, cruelty from others</p><p>Found shelter in a shed and watched the Finally found protection from the weather family living in the cottage connected to and from the cruelty of people. Was able the shed to see what caring was between people and what a family was like. Realizes that he doesn’t have this and that he is very different from other people.</p><p>Hears music and learns language Discovers beauty in the sound of music and how it makes the people feel; learns to communicate so that he can speak with the family he is watching. 2. The creature says, “I found it [shed] a good shelter from the snow, rain, and the cruelty of man.” How are these three similar? </p><p>They are all uncomfortable, painful, cold </p><p>Why would he connect them (put them together)?</p><p>He needs to be protected from them. They are all negative experiences</p><p>3. There are three new characters. Who are they (names and relationship)?</p><p>Felix- son/brother Agatha- sister/daughter Father</p><p>4. How does the creature get to know the family who lives in the cottage?</p><p>He watches them through a hole in the shed</p><p>5. Why is he drawn (attracted) to the family? </p><p>They are caring and kind towards one another. </p><p>6. What is he learning from them?</p><p>He is learning what a family is like and he wants to have that b/c he is alone.</p><p>7. How do the villagers’ reactions and his view of his own face affect how he sees himself?</p><p>He is terrified, ashamed and full of sorrow about how he looks</p><p>8. How does the creature try to reach out to the family in the cottage?</p><p>He does favors for them- clears the snow and provides wood for the fire. 9. What is he hoping will happen between him and this family?</p><p>He is hoping that they will be appreciative of the favors he is doing and will ask him to be a part of their lives. He is hoping that his kindness will be looked on with gratitude.</p><p>10. Hope is defined as: the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best. Is hope important in life? Why?</p><p>It’s important for people to feel hope. It’s what challenges us to do things, to be positive and confident and to move forward.</p><p>What happens when hope is lost? What does it do to people?</p><p>People stop trying, they get depressed, they can hurt themselves</p>
