2 In General

With our 2010 workcamp programme, ijgd welcomes you to send volunteers to our international workcamps in Germany. We offer a wide range of projects in which volunteers get involved in meaningful work and take an active part in the daily decision making processes of group life.

Background and Goals

Ijgd is a non-profit, non-denominational organisation which has been active in international youth work since 1948. Each year ijgd organises international youth workcamps in Germany. In cooperation with partner organisations of the Alliance a worldwide network has been created, so that volunteers can participate in workcamps all over the world. However, this programme will focus on workcamps in Germany. Our aim is to encourage young people to become aware of existing social and environmental conditions, enabling them to become an active and responsible participant in a democratic society. This learning process leads (among other things) to the examination of one's own cultural norms and values. Consequently it will help break down barriers between people which have been built on cultural, social and ethnical differences. This development of international understanding is regarded as a contribution to the furtherance of world peace. ijgd Workcamp Conditions

 Each workcamp lasts about three weeks  Participants are usually between 16 to 26 years of age  Minors (under 18 years) need written permission (which they must bring to the camp!) from their guardians  Volunteers are expected to work about five hours/day; 25 to 30 hours/week, except Saturday and Sunday  Groups consist of approximately 15 volunteers  Camps are run using the principle of self-organisation. Therefore, volunteers are expected to contribute to the daily life of the group by cooking, shopping, organising free-time activities and day to day running of the whole event  Accommodation is simple (youth hostels, schools, forest huts or tents)  Projects may include renovation, environmental work, play schemes with children, work with elderly, etc.

Group Leaders

Group leaders are usually of the same age as the participants. Usually there are two leaders, trained through ijgd seminars. Due to the principal of self-organisation, leaders should not have a leadership role, rather be a participant themselves. They are also responsible for the contact to the project's partners, to take care of administrative details and to ensure self-organisation of the group.

3 Befor and After the Workcamp Before the workcamp season starts, ijgd organises a preparation weekend for its German participants, in order to clarify expectations, challenges of workcamps and to sensitize volunteers for intercultural differences. After the workcamp season in autumn, volunteers and camp leaders are invited to an evaluation meeting. You are more than welcome to give us your personal feedback.

IJGD 0101 - OPEN YOURSELF TO NEW WORLDS 26/06-18/07/10 SOCI 18 ans. 12 VOLS EXTA FEE: 35.00 EUR WORK: Project: Your team will be working in an apartment facility for the mentally handicapped run by the Social Foundation of Köpenick. The residents work in various workshops until the early afternoon. In the afternoons the main job, for 3-4 hours, will be organizing and putting on a summer festival with the residents. Bring your creative side, for ideas for decorations, games, entertainment (i.e. music and theater), and food. You will also have plenty of time to organize and go on excursions with the residents. Catering: On weekdays lunch will be provided; all other meals will be prepared as a group. Accommodation: You will share rooms in the Pro-Social center. LOCATION: Where: Berlin. Free Time: The Köpenick district is on the edge of Berlin. Nearby are two rivers, countless lakes, and vast woodlands. In your accommodation there are club rooms, a party basement, computers, and a fitness room available for you to use. The city center is easily reachable with public transport; tickets will be provided for you. The extra fee of €35 is needed for public transport. TERMINAL: Train: Berlin / Airport: Berlin SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of German is desired, though not required

IJGD 0212 - INTERCULTURAL COOPERATION 03/07-24/07/10 SOCI 16 ans. 12 VOLS WORK: Project: Experience Europe First Hand—your group will be running a “camp in a camp” and a graffiti- project for children and youth aged 12 and up. During the first week you will develop the program for the “camp in a camp” and put on various events, and during the second week up to 30 children and youth will be there. Please bring ideas from home, such as for games, recipes, art, music, and fantasy. During the third week a graffiti artist will be coming, who, along with you and the children, will be painting a 4x6 meter container. You can also let your creative side shine by building sculptures out of concrete and wood for decoration. Catering: Lunch will be provided; the other meals will be prepared together as a group. Accommodation: You will stay in tents on the Youth Center grounds. LOCATION: Lower Saxony; Hannover 50 km, Bremen 70 km, Hamburg 150 km. Free Time: Pool, tour along the Weser River, canoeing, grilling, trips, and visits to various events in Nienburg are all possible here. Trips to Hannover, Bremen, and Hamburg are also very worthwhile. Bikes will be provided for you to get better acquainted with the area. Marklohe is a rural but pretty community with a good infrastructure. The towns of Nienburg and Weser are 6 kilometers away and has good public transport connections to Bremen and Hannover. The youth center consists of a building with an office and small kitchen, and an old circus wagon as a common room. IJGD 0240 - GAMES AND ADVENTURE CAMP FOR KIDS 10/07-31/07/10 KIDS 18 ans. 16 VOLS WORK: Project: Do you enjoy working with kids, and would like to help the local kids in Wismar have a great vacation? Over 100 kids between the ages of 6 and 10 will be participating in a large summer camp. Every day runs under a different motto. Your ideas for creative and active games will help make these days an unforgettable experience for you and the kids. Games, songs, and craft ideas from your home countries will give the camp an international flair. At times the kids will show you around the city center. 10 Accommodation: You will be staying at the „Wagenburg“, a small camp with a covered wagon, grill, clay oven, and an adventure spirit. For pictures and further information please see www.wagenburg.wobau-wismar.de. LOCATION: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Wismar is on the Baltic Sea coast between Lubeck and Rostock. Free Time: In the „Wagenburg“, located at the edge of Wismar you can play volleyball and soccer. You will be provided with bikes so you can visit the Baltic Sea and the city center. The city is a World Heritage Site and the old part of town and the harbor are worth a look. Trips to Lubeck, Rostock, or to Poel Island are also possible! IJGD 0328 - ALL AROUND THE WORLD 13/07-03/08/10 KIDS 16 ans. 13 VOLS WORK: Project: This year’s motto is „The World Comes to Julich” and “Under the Sea”. 70 kids are just waiting to play games and make crafts with you! The work may be tedious at times, but the beautiful landscape makes it worthwhile. You will sometimes work on a nearby island to change the work up a bit. With support of local organizations and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe Regional Forestry Office, you will help finish a few stations on the nature studies path. This path offers opportunities to use each sense as well as game and recreational stations, in order to ‘awaken’ interest in nature and ecology. You will work on the “Root Station”, for example, where a tree stump will be raised up so that the roots are visible, and decorated objects will hang from them. The “Forest and Cultural History Station” will be built at the Nonnenstein Lookout Point, where you will erect columns with information about the tower. In order to make the landscape more accessible to visitors, a trail network was begun in 2005, and has slowly been being extended ever since. Working with the local grounds crews and in cooperation with the Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, you will be helping

18 with the further construction of these hiking trails. Tasks include maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding some sections, clearing debris, building benches and observation points, creating and setting up signs, and caring for the wooded areas around the trails. Most of the work lies in manual labor, but the grounds crew and others will be there to help. At the end your accomplishments will be presented to the public. If time remains, local youth will join you for other jobs that need doing, such as continuing work on an adventure trail, building a mountain bike trail, erecting a stone wall, as well as partaking in a wide range of other nature activities. Your team will also repair the border between two areas of the cemetery. The day after you arrive you will take part in the Johannisfeuer festival and get to know some of the locals. Unfortunately, the square is not in very good condition. However, with your help, it will be redone for next year: the old lawn stones and fence need to be removed. After this is finished, benches need to be built, the grill area needs to be paved, and a hedge will be planted. The grand finale will be building a footbridge near the square. The garden is taken care of families with immigrant backgrounds from eleven different countries and you will be working with them at times. After an introduction to the technology you will develop your own story line, and then shoulder the camera yourself! After filming you can further develop and enhance your material, and at the end of the camp your film will be broadcast live! You will be led by experienced media educators and will learn a great deal about media work with video and TV. This camp is for everyone who has an interest in media, video, and television. Due to their artistic, cultural, and societal importance, they now are under monumental protection and will be converted to parks with open green spaces. For this to happen, these important graves and the overall character of the cemetery need to be preserved. You will help prepare and paint the lattices, trim the area around the grave and clean the gravestones, remove ivy and other pesky plants, and reinforce the pathways. Here, where roofing tiles and stones were made for over 100 years, you will be helping to build an area where others can experience this history behind this old factory. First the room with the factory’s large, powerful oven needs to be completely renovated. A dark pathway, a barefoot path, and a sound/music area are just a few of the 40 stations which will make up the museum’s latest exhibit, called the “Sinnesgänge”. This will be both inside and around the oven. In order to make this happen, the oven room needs to be washed and the window cleaned and repaned. The stones around the oven are full of soot and misshapen, these need to come out, be cleaned and fixed, then put back in again. This camp is for those that enjoy experiencing alternate lifestyles and manual work. Since 1999, archeologists have been building a recreation to show how the Iron Age settlers once lived. Here in Titz is a branch of the Rhine Office for Archeological Preservation. Under expert leadership, you will work with authentic tools to build an Iron Age house, following historical blueprints, so that you can get a visual idea of the living environment of the day. You will work with wooden beams, build walls out of trellises and clay, and finish it off with a thatch roof. You will then produce tools and crockery, as well as other every day objects. What can you do against the ever threatening climate collapse? In this camp you can help maintain our natural resources and find answers to the above questions. Step by step, you will practice good environment protection measures. The grounds attached to the Göhrde Train Station have an ecology teaching facility, where you will learn various horticulture and manual techniques for maintaining the building and its grounds. At the same time you can learn about the differences between utopia and ecological reality. As the area is quite known in the decade long debate against nuclear waste transport and dumping, it is the perfect area to learn about political environment issues and get to know your political ‘self’. Catering: Meals will be prepared as a group. Accommodation: You will stay in an education center, which is located in a restored, protected train station. LOCATION: Lower Saxony; Lüneburg 40 km, Hamburg 80 km. Free Time: Göhrde lies in a well located yet not too busy area. The Elbe River is 7 km away, and the nearby woodlands are perfect for a visit. Your creative minds are needed at the end, to help organize a dedication ceremony will take place with the local children and their parents. The work will be led by experts in the field.
