Rubric examples

Three examples of abbreviated rubrics or grading sheets. The sample criteria are taken from a FND Perspective class and would obviously need to be altered according to the assignment and course.

Example #1: Teachers just make a checkmark on each continuum. The main distinction here is acceptable or “yes” and not acceptable or “no”.

The placement of the light source results in YES ______|______NO interesting design and shadow shapes There is a clear focal point and composition is YES ______|______NO unified by the value pattern Media application is smooth and controlled YES ______|______NO with consistent transitions between values. Hard and soft edges are clear and don’t bleed Overall grade:

Example #2: The description for an unacceptable mark in any category has been added here.

ACCEPTABLE NOT ACCEPTABLE The placement of the light Placement of the light source results in ______|______source appears random, interesting design and resulting in uninteresting shadow shapes design and shadow shapes. There is a clear focal Composition lacks a clear point and composition is ______|______focal point and unity. unified by the value pattern Media application is Application of media does smooth and controlled ______|______not appear controlled. with consistent transitions Transitions may be between values. Hard and inconsistent and edges soft edges are clear and may bleed. don’t bleed Overall grade: Comments:

Teachers may wish to assign points to each criteria and calculate the final grade based on points earned in each category.
