Stomp, Stomp, Stomp! By M. Speranza BBCD #4, Track #43
Music vocabulary: drum roll, fast, stop, higher
Before passing out the drums, talk about how a dinosaur might walk or move (“stomp”.) Ask children to tap their legs three times as you sing and point to the words “stomp, stomp, stomp” on the song card. Next, using both hands, tap your legs very rapidly and let out a roar! Ask the children if your hands moved “fast” or “slow.” Tell them that this is called a “drum roll” and have them practice it on their legs. Have your red/green stop and go sign handy to help give the signal to stop the drum roll. Now continue with the second line of the song, having them again tap the steady beat. After they can sing the song and do the drum roll fairly well, model with a child or another adult how to share a drum by placing it on the floor between you and your partner. Pass out the drums, having children share as necessary, and lead the song. Help them notice that the dinosaurs on the picture and our voices (melody) go “up” or “get higher” (in pitch, NOT volume!). For older children, you might add the C, D, and E tone bells to play only on the “stomp, stomp, stomp” part.
