Course description

Independent art history is a class designed to provide students with the opportunity to engage in self directed art study. Within this course students will actively research notable periods of time and/or art movements and create an original piece representing that time period. A minimum of ten assignments will be required. Upon completion of each assignment students will present their finished project to me for critique and evaluation, work will be graded according to the rubric provided on this syllabi. Student work will need to be original in design and composition. Students will be required to research artists and subject matter.

Student responsibilities

Each student enrolled in Independent study is required to do the following:

Complete a minimum of ten assignments

Develop a cohesive body of original artwork

Exhibit maturity, self direction and self reliance

Engage in research of artists and movements in art

Maintain a reasonable work ethic

Be responsible for your artwork and ultimately your own success

Each assignment will reflect a genuine effort and a sincere investigation on the student’s behalf. The quality of the art work should reflect time invested as well as the overall appearance.

Sloppy, poorly executed or otherwise “thrown together at the last minute” work will not be accepted.

Assignment list and due dates

The list of assignments is a mutually constructed and agreed upon document. Any deviation will result in a failing grade for each assignment not turned in. Repeated violation of the contract will result in failing the class.

Requirements:

You will be required to write an artist statement with your work. An Artist statement needs to include the title and media of your pieces. Your artist statement should include why you make art, what inspires you, what media you enjoy using and why. You should also refer to your pieces by name using art vocabulary to discuss the work. Refer to elements of art and principles of design. Your artist statement shouldn’t be any longer than one page, but should be informative and refer to art vocabulary.

Independent Assignment listing

For each one of your pieces, please list the media and provide a detailed description of your artwork. Title your piece and briefly discuss your subject matter and choice of media. Rubric for all independent pieces:

Craftsmanship and neatness---20pts.

Idea and original subject matter representative of a specific movement or period in the 20 th century---20pts.

Composition-arrangement of objects on the page---20pts.

Use of chosen art media---20pts.

Implementation of principles of design and art elements: color, value, proportion, contrast, variety, balance, unity, emphasis, pattern, texture, form, space, shape, line, rhythm, and movement---20pts.
