3 SAFE WORK INSTRUCTIONS FOR Micro-Hardness Tester Load 10gms to 1kg Located in the Metallography Laboratory

1. Authorisation  Training to be done by Mr Irek Kozicki.  Authorisation from Mr Irek Kozicki or deputy required to undertake work.  Once train you can put your name in the log book to book a time. 2. Hazards associated with equipment/machinery/technique/process: Long periods of sitting, take breaks! Swivel of indentor/objective, allow space for this to occur and refrain from touching equipment while swivelling. Avoid the specimen to hit the indenter or the objective lens during coarse focus. This will damage these components. 3. Before you start work:  Training to be done by Mr Irek Kozicki before undertaking task.  Familiarise yourself with other risks associated with the room.  Visually inspect cables and electrical connections for signs of wear and tear.  Familiarise yourself with instructions manual and operating procedures.

Personal protective equipment to be used: None required. 4. The environment where the task is to be undertaken: Room 186 Building 37 The equipment is located in the Metallographic Lab. Be aware of surroundings.

5. Step by step procedures for task

 Turn power on which is located at the back of hardness tester.  Select Load by manual moving the load selection knob located on the top right side of equipment.  Put the specimen on the stage  Turn the objective lens x10 to the working position. This is done by pressing the right and left arrows in keypad. This allows you to do coarse focus.  Slowly turn the thumbwheel clockwise to focus the optical system until you are satisfied  Press right or left key pad to change the obj to x40 which is the fine focus and do the final focus if needed.  Begin the test by pressing START on the keypad. 4  After the test is complete the system waits for you to measure and input the length of diagonals. 5  6 7

 Once you finish Hardness test, please turn off power and put plastic cover to protect equipment.  If there is any concerns please contact Mr Irek Kozicki on ext 54921.

9. After hours access procedures After hours access for Research staff and PhD students to work alone. Undergraduate student users must obtain authorisation from their supervisor and the academic in charge of the room..
