Threshold to Hope, Inc. We are excited to announce a new nonprofit with a unique opportunity for art in the community. Threshold to Hope and Prairie315 will be hosting a joint Grand Opening and Benefit Art Sale to celebrate their new beginnings on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 10:00am – 5:00pm at Prairie315. The public is invited to attend. All sales will benefit Threshold to Hope, Inc.

Threshold to Hope, Inc. is a new community service dedicated to offering hope and healing through art to those who can least afford it. This includes, but is not limited to, the homeless, disabled, those on a fixed income, or anyone else who simply cannot afford the luxury of doing art. They offer a safe environment to explore new skills or develop existing skills through instruction and/or mentoring. As art is created, marketing opportunities will be offered to those who desire to sell their art.

Founders, Nora and David Zaring, have been involved with services to the homeless for the past 13 years. Nora works for Home Sweet Home Ministries as Education and Discipleship Coordinator and David has been a volunteer there as well. Nora is a founding member of Inside Out: Accessible Art, an art co-op and gallery, for the last 4 years and David is a supporting member. God has taken their passion for people and their love of art and combined it into this new and unique program.Threshold to Hope is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose sole purpose is offering these art opportunities regardless of a person’s ability to pay. Donations are welcome but never expected.Current hours of operation are Mondays and Fridays from10:00am – 2:00pm at Prairie315.

YWCA MISSION MOVIE: CESAR CHAVEZ Join us on Saturday, October 7 at 5 p.m. at Western Avenue Community Center, 600 North Western Avenue, Bloomington for a FREE screening of Cesar Chavez. WHY THIS FILM? Cesar Chavez is a biographical drama of the life of César Chávez, a Mexican-American who fought tenaciously for the rights of farm workers’ and lead movements to raise their salaries and living conditions. The boycotts and strikes he organized broke boundaries and paved the way for many organizers after him. This event is co-hosted with Western Avenue Community Center and will be a Spanish-English bilingual screening with a guided discussion following the film.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (ages 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. Central Illinois Pride Health Center Presents- Fall Feast Adult Social The Center will be hosting a Fall-themed potluck and social gathering for adults 19 years old and older for networking, community, and fun!  Do you need a translator or another family member to communicate with them? Sharing The Ability to Read STAR Literacy Program Can Help!

STAR Literacy volunteer tutors provide free English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for adults with limited English skills and Adult Basic Education (ABE) instruction for adults with reading and math skills below the 9th grade level. STAR Literacy will partner with area social service agencies, schools and early childhood education programs to serve adults eligible for literacy services. Tutoring is provided in public locations in our community by trained volunteer tutors working either one on one or with small groups of adult students. Fresh Fare: An Apple a Day The University of Illinois Extension and Evenglow Inn are bringing you Fresh Fare: An Apple a Day. Grant Opportunities from Illinois Prairie Community Foundation The Women to Women Giving Circle and Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) at Illinois Prairie Community Foundation will be accepting applications for grants from October 1 - 31, 2017. Successful applicants will receive funding in January 2018.

The focus for 2018 Women to Women grants is programs that seek to develop the potential of all girls in our community aged 0-5 and their support networks (families, teachers, caregivers). Women to Women has granted $245,000 over the past seven years to programs that increase opportunities and the well-being of women and girls. Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) accepts applications for programs that are youth-focused or have a significant impact on youth. Eastview Food Pantry Closed during the morning shifts only (10:00-11:30 am) on Wednesday, November 1st; Thursday, November 2nd; Wednesday, November 8th & Thursday, November 9th.

Eastview Food Pantry will be closed for Thanksgiving November 21st – 23rd. Imagine Eastview Christian Church’s Holiday Assistance Program and the 2017 Distribution Day is Saturday, December 2nd. If you are in need of assistance you are invited to register at one of these sites.

Bloomington Public Library Programs Better Together Paint Project @ Bloomington Library Wednesday, October 4  6pm; Community Room  Registration required Children and their caregivers are welcomed to join us at 6pm in the Bloomington Public Library Community Room where we will work together to paint a masterpiece using painter’s tape and basic art supplies. There’s no limit to what you can create! Registration is limited to 20 teams of 2-6 people (at least one adult needed on each team) and will open at 10am on Monday, September 11. Principals Read @ Bloomington Library The principal of each District 87 elementary school will visit Bloomington Public Library and read some of their favorite stories aloud to students. Students and parents are encouraged to come to the Children’s Department, especially if it’s the night their school’s principal is leading story time and sharing with students the importance of reading. Singing Swinging Story Time Monday, October 9 @ 6:30pm Saturday, October 14 @ 11am This story time is perfect for the whole family. Children will enjoy an extravaganza of stories, fingerplays, laughs, and songs accompanied by guitar! A parent or caregiver must accompany children to this 6:30pm program in the Bloomington Public Library Children’s Department. Tinker Lab Thursday, October 12  6:30pm; Community Room  Grades 3-5  Registration required Full S.T.E.A.M ahead! Kids in grades 3-5 are invited to join us for hands-on projects that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math on the 2nd Thursday of each month from September-November. Music Makers Story Time Monday, October 16  10am; Community Room Families with children of all ages are invited to shake their sillies out at this interactive music and movement program at 10am in the Bloomington Public Library Community Room. We’ll boogie down to favorite children’s tunes, play with simple instruments, learn movement activities, and enjoy a book or two. Join us in the Community Room for this active, whole-body approach to early learning! A parent or caregiver needs to accompany children. Teen Advisory Board (TAB) Thursday, October 19  4:30-6pm; teenZone If you’re a teen in grades 6-12 and you want to share your opinions about the teen books purchased and the teen programs offered by Bloomington Public Library, this is the place you should be. TAB will meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 4:30-6pm in teenZone. The group will play games and discuss Bloomington Public Library’s teen services.

Small Business Series with SCORE: Hiring, Training, and Managing Employees Thursday, October 19  6:30pm; Community Room Small business owners and others in the business world will learn valuable tips and practices in this series of programs lead by SCORE. Global Tales Saturday, October 21  3rd Saturday of the month  11am; Children’s Department  Children of all ages Join IWU international students at 11am in the Bloomington Public Library Children’s Department as they read stories about their native countries and give cultural lessons about our world. A different country will be featured at each session. There will also be fun activities such as songs, dances, and games!

FAFSA Workshop Saturday, October 21  1pm; Community Room  Teens & Adults Are you heading to college next year? Join us at 1pm in the Bloomington Public Library Community Room for help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2018-2019 School Year. A representative from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission will be on hand to assist students and their families with their FAFSA applications. (The state deadline for Illinois is “as soon as possible” after October 1, 2017. Awards are made until funds are depleted.) Bring the following: 1. Your Social Security Number 2. Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen) 3. Your most recent federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. 4. Halloween Movie Friday, October 27  1pm; Community Room Enjoy a day off school and get ready for Halloween by visiting the library and watching the movie Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Meet at 1pm in the Bloomington Public Library Community Room.

Twin City Tale Spinners Present “Not So Spooky Stories” Saturday, October 28  11am; Children’s Dept. Enjoy “silly and chilly” tales as the Twin City Tale Spinners delight listeners with fun stories at 11am in the Bloomington Public Library Children’s Department. Come dressed in your costume if you wish! After the stories, we’ll have crafts for kids to make in the Children’s Department! This program is for children of all ages with an adult.

Halloween Parade and Story Time Tuesday, October 31  Parade begins at 10am  Children’s Department & Community Room Kids of all ages are invited to come to the Library in costume to join us for our annual Halloween Parade and Story Time. The parade will begin at 10am in the Bloomington Public Library Children’s Department and will end with a special Halloween story time in the Community Room. After story time, we’ll have crafts for kids to make in the Children’s Department until noon. And we’ll have a special treat! The Bookmobile will be transformed into the Boooo -kmobile! It will be parked on Olive Street where kids can visit to play Halloween games and activities until noon. (The Booo -kmobile will be accessible from the patio entrance on the 2nd Floor). MCLP Poverty Simulation October 22, 2017 What are the barriers low-income families face in maneuvering through daily challenges? Participants in the Thursday, October 26 poverty simulation at Calvary United Methodist Church will get to experience some of these barriers first-hand. This simulation is a joint venture between the Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP) and the University of Illinois Extension Office. It is open to the community with advance registration. Anyone interested in learning more about the experiences of those living in poverty is welcome to attend.

In this workshop, participants assume roles of individuals dealing with challenges such as unemployment, child care needs, and transportation issues, and must keep up with the ongoing pressures of maintaining housing and feeding their families.

MCLP invited the community to join them on Thursday, October 26, 4:30 – 8 p.m., at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1700 N. Towanda Ave, Normal. Registration for participants and volunteers is at tiny.cc/PovSimMCLP. The event is free, and participants are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to benefit the less fortunate.
