Dear Parents, The First Grade work is starting to get more difficult as the year goes on. Please try to find time every evening to listen to your child read books, read their sight words, review the spelling words, work on math facts through 12, and go over the Dolch Word Lists. Much of this can be done on the computer with Reading Eggs and IXL Math. I would recommend helping your child learn their double math facts and facts of 10. Ex. 3+3=, 4+4=, 5+5=, 6+6=, 7+7=, 8+8=, 9+9=, 10+10= 5+5, 4+6, 3+7, 2+8, 1+9. Next week we will begin to work on Lesson 15 in reading. The name of the story we will read is “Animal Groups”. These are the new sight words your child should work on this weekend: bird both eyes fly long or those walk. We will be learning to read and spell words with long i and silent e. The new spelling words will be these words with long i and silent e: time like kite bike white drive stripe mice. We will also work on words with the phonograms -ine and -ite in them (nine, kite), suffixes -er & -est, (bigger, biggest) and digraphs kn, wr, gn, mb (knee, wren, gnash and thumb). In math we will be starting Topic 7- Numbers to 120. We will begin working with hundreds charts and master adding and subtracting 10s and 1s. If you are looking for a skill to help your students, please practice counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s! Thank you  There will be no school for students on Monday, Jan. 23 and Tuesday, Jan. 24. These are work days for the teachers. I can’t believe we are already preparing for winter conferences! Valentines Day is coming up!! Please help your child decorate a valentine box at home for their Valentine cards. You may use whatever you want for a container or box (shoeboxes and cereal boxes work great). Just leave an opening big enough for a large envelope to fit through. I find that pretty gift wrap works well to cover the box  Your child may bring boxes to school as soon as they are finished. All containers need to be here by Friday, February 10. That will give boys and girls time to put their Valentines in the boxes. Here is a class list for your child to get started on their Valentines.
