2 Introduction

The aim of this guide is to welcome you to the SHN/LAC Nurse Service, to provide you with information relating to your placement and help identify the learning opportunities and potential experiences you can access whilst on placement whilst gaining an insight into the aims and values of both services We hope that you enjoy your placement and that you find the experience educationally enriching

'Experience and especially shared experience is infinitely more educative than books' (John Dewey Educational Philosopher)

School Health Mission Statement Nurses have a key role to play in society's efforts to deal with public health challenges, as well as providing services to meet the needs of society. (WHO 2002) It can invest in the health of children and young people by providing easily accessible information about health in an interactive fashion. By working collaboratively with other agencies the school health team can target and support young members of our society. It can empower young people to make positive health choices necessary for them to improve their health and achieve their full potential physically, psychologically, socially and academically, thereby improving the future health of our nation. (J Cairns 2006)

SHN team mission statement 2016  Supporting and empowering children and young people to make healthy life choices

Definition of Public Health Public health is defined as: The science and art preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health, through the organised efforts of society, organisations public and private, communities and individuals'' (Walness, 2007)

Dundee School Health Nursing Service

The provision of a school health service is a statutory requirement (Education Act 1996) and the Dundee SHN team, based at the Crescent is composed of registered nurses and support workers with a potential caseload of approximately 29,000 pupils. The SHN ‘s work within the School Health Team in partnership with other health professionals in both the Community & Acute setting as well as our multi-professional partners in Education, Social Services and the voluntary sector.

The role has changed from routine screening towards targeting need and supporting vulnerable children/young people and their families with a service that is universally accessible, non-stigmatising and is acceptable to families and communities by tackling inequalities as part of the Government Health Care Agenda. It is widely recognised that investing in children's health lays the foundation for their future adult health and that health and education can have a profound impact on a child’s life chances. This statement is well supported by government polices and documents.
