MINI UPDATE OCT 12th, 2017

Training

As usual, except there will not be any training for Phil’s group on Saturday, Oct. 21st as it is the high school provincial championships at Rundle Park.

Upcoming Meets

Oct. 21st Provincial High School Champs, Rundle Park Oct. 28th Stewart Cup. This is primarily a university/college meet. If you want to enter enter yourselves and let Phil know. We might change our Saturday session this week to Wetaskiwin to run over the provincial champs course. Nov. 4th Provincial Champs – all age groups, Wetaskiwin – details below. Nov. 18th Harriers Celebration Night. Our main social of the year. Don’t miss it! Nov. 18th Last Chance Meet, Butterdome Nov. 25th Canadian Cross Country Championships, Kingston, Ontario.

Looking Ahead

Oct. 30th 1st indoor session, Kinsmen Fieldhouse 4.30 – 6 ish. (Phil’s group will still be at Hawrelak as the cross country season has not finished.) As there will not be a session for George’s group on Tuesday, Oct. 31st (Halloween) his group may want to delay starting indoors till Wednesday when coach Arlo will be there or even Thursday when there will be two coaches available to look after that group. Sat. Nov 11/Sun Nov 12thHarriers Casino. I believe there are still a number of slots to fill. On average the casino adds about $600 a year per athlete to our funds. Without the casino our membership fees would have to almost double. If you haven’t signed up yet contact our casino volunteer co-ordinator Megan McDougald [email protected] As per membership guidelines all members are committed to providing volunteers for the casino.

Alberta Provincial Cross Country Championships, Wetaskiwin, Sat. Nov. 4th

The culmination of the cross-country season for most people. We encourage all members to participate, even those who do not consider themselves primarily distance runners. There is a team aspect to this meet and we need 4 runners per category to make a team. Very often, especially at the pee wee and bantam age groups, the competition is weaker than at school meets and provincial medals are there for the taking.

Entries to Phil by Sat. Oct. 28th at midnight. You must include first and last name, date of birth and AA number. Info at. https://www.athleticsalberta.com/event/2017-alberta-xc-provincials-all-ages- 2/#1504581976538-229a4f9e-a4c9

Talent Optimization Program

A number of members have received information about and invitations to be involved in the newly-created TOP. Those athletes (and parents) please read carefully over the information available on the Edmonton Track & Field Council website. If you wish to pursue this please have your info ready to submit before or on the evening of the open house. It involves some info that should be completed in consultation with your coach. This means getting together after training one day this week or next. Unfortunately there will not be time to gather the info after the open house as the deadline is the same day as the open house.

If you have not received an invitation, but are close to meeting the standards established (found on the etfc website) and want to be involved let Phil know. There is some wiggle room for the developmental group. You are encouraged to attend the open house. Athletes/parents should read over the info and decide if the benefits of this program are worth the effort to be made to apply. Let Phil and/or George know ASAP if you plan to apply so we can arrange to get together. Gathering statistical info required will be the responsibility of the athlete, goal setting etc should be done in consultation with coach. Open House

The Talent Optimization Program (T.O.P) is a new athlete support program made specifically for members of the Edmonton Track and Field Council. The TOP will help enable Edmonton's high performing athletes and coaches to achieve their goals on their path to provincial, national and international success.

The purpose of the open house is to give the local track & field community the opportunity to meet the T.O.P Committee, Integrated Support Teams, and local Olympians and to ask any questions or concerns that they may have about the T.O.P.

 Date: Monday, October 30th  Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM  Location: Percy Page Centre Main Floor - 11759 Groat Rd NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 3K6
