SENIOR BETA STATE CONVENTION COMPETITION CATEGORIES

***FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD PLACE ACADEMIC WRITTEN TEST WINNERS IN ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES AND SPELLING AT STATE CONVENTION WILL RECEIVE INVITATIONS TO COMPETE AT THE NATIONAL CONVENTION.****

AGRICULTURE 1. This will be a one-hour exam. 2. Questions will range from basic agriculture terms to problem solving to current issues dealing with consumer concerns, national and global trade and marketing. Participant should be knowledgeable in the fields of animal science, plant science, soil science, and agri-business. 3. Calculators will be allowed. No references will be allowed. Bring your own pencil. 4. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil.

CLUB WREATH 1. A club may enter only one wreath. 2. The wreath may be of any size and shape as long as it fits into a 30-inch square. 3. The wreath may be constructed of either living or artificial materials. 4. All work done on the wreath must be done by Betas. 5. The wreath must follow the national theme: Beta - A Circle of Winners 6. The wreath will be judged on: a. creativity in construction b. originality of theme c. use of color d. overall appearance NOTE: Since Beta Club is a service organization, it would be appropriate for each club to donate their wreath to an elderly person, a nursing home, a hospital, or other organization of the club's choice.

CREATIVE WRITING 1. Creative writing of 300-500 words in essay format. Students must record their own word count. 2. The competition will last for sixty (60) minutes. 3. No pre-written materials are allowed. 4. Each student MUST bring a pen/pencil and loose leaf paper. 5. Each student may bring a dictionary and/or thesaurus. 6. Subject to be assigned at the beginning of the competition. 7. If a student wants the manuscript returned, a stamped, self-addressed envelope should be turned in at the beginning of the competition. ENGLISH 1. One hour written exam. 2. Questions will come from English II, III, and IV and will cover both grammar and literature. 3. No resource material (dictionary, thesaurus, etc.) will be allowed. 4. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil. 5. In case of a tie, the participant who finished the exam first will be declared the winner. (As exams are turned in they will be marked with an order or time of finish.)

FRENCH 1. One hour written exam. 2. Participants must have learned French through courses taken in school. In other words, this is a French as a second language exam. 3. Questions will come from French I and II. 4. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil. 5. In case of a tie, the participant who finished the exam first will be declared the winner. (As exams are turned in, they will be marked with an order or time of finish.)

MATH 1. One hour written exam. 2. Questions will come from Algebra I and II, geometry, and advanced math. 3. No mechanical aids (calculators, computers, etc.) will be allowed. 4. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil. 5. In case of a tie, the participant who finished the exam first will be declared the winner. (As exams are turned in, they will be marked with an order or time of finish.)

ORATORY 1. The oration must be between three (3) and four (4) minutes long. Points will be deducted for the infraction of this rule. (5 points for every 15 seconds) 2. Manuscripts must be typed (double-spaced) and handed to the judges before the contestant speaks. The manuscripts become the property of the National Beta Club. 3. No more than 75 quoted words will be permitted. Plagiarism will disqualify the participant from the competition. 4. Manuscripts must indicate all sources used whether those sources are quoted directly or indirectly. This must be done in bibliography form. If a bibliography is not needed, a sheet at the back of the speech must indicate no bibliography needed. A speech without a bibliography or sheet indicating that no bibliography will have points deducted from score. 5. Note cards may not used. Speech must be given from memory. 6. Orations must be of the persuasive or informative type. 7. This is to be an oration. Therefore, no interpretation, dramatization, or acting should be included. Points will be deducted by the judges for infraction of this rule. 8. Participants must be dressed in professional attire. This means females are to wear a dressy pantsuit with coordinating jacket or a business suit and the males are to wear a suit or a blazer with dress slacks, a tie and dress shoes. Competitors are not to wear clothing attire that alludes to the topic of the speech being presented. Example- to wear a tie with the characters from the Wizard of Oz when the speech is about following the “Yellow Brick Roads of Life” would not be accepted. 9. No costuming or props may be used. (i.e. wearing of a flag pin during a patriotic speech.) 10. Points will be deducted for infraction of rules.

SCIENCE 1. One hour written exam. 2. Questions will come from general science, biology, chemistry, and physics. 3. No mechanical aids (calculators, computers, etc.) or reference materials (books, charts, etc.) will be allowed. 4. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil.

SOCIAL STUDIES 1. One hour written exam. 2. Questions will come from American history, civics, economics, world history, geography, and current events. 3. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil. 4. In case of a tie, the participant who finished the exam first will be declared the winner. (As exams are turned in, they will be marked with an order or time of finish.)

SPANISH 1. One hour written exam. 2. Participants must have learned Spanish through courses taken in school. In other words, this is Spanish as a second language exam. 3. Questions will come from Spanish I -IV. 4. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil. 5. In case of a tie, the participant who finished the exam first will be declared the winner. (As exams are turned in, they will be marked with an order or time of finish.) 6. No reference materials will be allowed. (i.e. dictionary, verb charts, electronic translators, etc. SPELLING 1. This will be written exam. 2. Words can be found in the dictionary or from lists provided by an independent firm. 3. Each participant must bring a sharpened #2 pencil. 4. The time you finish the test will be recorded. In case of a tie, the participant who finished the test first will be declared the winner.

KENTUCKY QUIZ BOWL CONTEST RULES 1. In order for a club to compete in the quiz bowl, it must bring its own complete and working buzzer system. 2. Each team MUST consist of four members. These four students must be registered at the convention and the national office in order to participate. The same four members must participate in oral rounds, if team advances. 3. The preliminary will be a multiple choice written exam. This exam must be taken by each individual student on your quiz bowl team. 4. The sixteen (16) teams with the highest composite scores on the written test will advance to the oral rounds, which will be in a quick recall format setting. Each team must provide an adult as an official to help with competition. 5. In the event a qualifying team member is unable to participate in the oral rounds, his/her team must withdraw from competition. No alternates may be used. 6. If a team is late or fails to appear at all, the team will forfeit their match. There will be no rearrangement of the match schedule.

SPECIAL TALENT 1. No more than four students 2. Can be dance, piano solo, song, 3. Time limit of four minutes. 4. MUST FOLLOW ALL GUIDELINES OF BETA OR YOU ARE DISQUALIFIED!

GROUP TALENT 1. Must have five or more participants. 2. Time limit of twelve minutes which includes set up and take down of props and instruments. 3. Can be dance, piano solo, song, 4. MUST FOLLOW ALL GUIDELINES OF BETA OR YOU ARE DISQUALIFIED! BANNER COMPETITION RULES 1. The banner is to measure 24" x 36" including fringe. A one half inch plus or minus will be allowed. The banner must be free flowing flag and two dimensional in design. (A two-dimensional banner has the design and lettering lying flat against the banner material. The depth of the design, lettering, etc. on the material must not exceed ¼ inch.) 2. Bring your own approximately five foot (5') T-standard for display. (easels are not considered T-standards) Banner may not be hung on “T” standard by a rope, ribbon, etc. 3. Basis for judging · Adherence to convention theme – 25 pts · Craftsmanship – 25 pts · Interpretation and illustration of convention theme – 25 pts · Originality, Creativity, and Contrast of Color – 25 pts Deduction of Points for Following Rule Infractions · Not having a five foot “T” standard and/or banner hung by rope, ribbon, etc. - 25 pts · Not adhering to banner rule size -25 pts 4. All work must be done by Beta members.

SCRAPBOOK COMPETITION GUIDELINES PURPOSE: The purpose of the scrapbook competition is to showcase the accomplishments of the individual chapters as well as to showcase the creative spirit of the members. In order to demonstrate the artistic abilities, the journaling abilities and the general creativity of the members, clubs are reminded that the scrapbooks should be NONCOMMERCIAL, meaning-artwork, lettering and other design elements should be created by the students using scissors, pens and pencils and blank paper. Scrapbooks that reflect student input and creative control from the blank sheet of paper to the finished product will be rewarded in the artwork category of the judging form. DEFINITION: A scrapbook is a collection of photographs, newspaper articles, correspondence, and memorabilia mounted in book form under an attached cover. The purpose is to record each Beta Club's service, membership, and activities for the school year or from convention to convention. A form of narration identifying and giving information on each section should be present. The theme of the scrapbook should be carried out through the title, cover, design, art work, and narration. KENTUCKY TEAM POSTER COMPETITION This contest will allow students to demonstrate their creative ability and their ability to work together on a team project. Teams will be given a theme at the beginning of the contest and given one hour to design and create a poster representing that theme. This contest will be held on Friday afternoon of the convention. Students who enter this contest may not enter another contest that conflicts with the time.

1. Each school may enter one team of two or three members. This is a team event and each team will create one poster. 2. Each team must bring sheets of blank white poster board (22" by 28"). 3. Each team must bring two pencils. 4. Each team may bring black, red, blue, yellow markers (any width). 5. Posters must be completed within the one-hour time limit. 6. Students must use the theme on the poster, but do not have to write it. 7. Posters will be judged and displayed in the Arts and Crafts area. They may be picked up during the pick up time after the viewing time. 8. Points will be deducted for rule infractions. 9. Posters will be judged using the following criteria: a.Adherence to theme b. Originality c. Creativity d.Neatness e.Overall appearance

ACRYLIC PAINTING 1. This will be an on site competition. 2. Two hour time limit. 3. Art Paper will be provided. 4. Red, Yellow, Blue, White and Black Paints will be provided. Only the paint provided by the coordinator may be used. 5. Each participant must provide his/her own brushes. Brushes allowed will be one fan brush, one flat brush, one round brush and one fine outline brush. 6. Still life objects will be set up by the coordinator or a designated person. 7. Art will be judged by a panel of judges

PENCIL DRAWING 1. This will be an on site competition. 2. Two hour time limit. 3. Art paper will be provided. 4. Each participant must provide his/her own pencil. 5. Still life objects will be set up by coordinator 6. Drawings will be judged by a panel of judges COLORED PENCIL DRAWING 1. This will be an on site competition. 2. Two-hour time limited. 3. Art paper will be provided. 4. Still life objects will be set up by the coordinator. 5. Students will be limited to using only a 12-color pencil set which will be provided on-site. 6. Designs will be judged by a panel of judges.
