and

in partnership with Morris County Child Abuse Prevention Collaboration present a symposium: Children/Youth and Human Trafficking in New Jersey: What We Need to Know, How to Recognize Human Trafficking and Children/Youth-At-Risk, and What Our Child/Youth-Based Law Enforcement, Educators and Administrators, Clinicians and other Service Providers, Child Welfare, and Other Professional Communities Can and Should Do to Help. Human Trafficking, one of the fastest growing criminal activities, spills far beyond our cities and is quite prevalent in suburbia. NJ is a prime location. It is happening here and involves our children/youth. As professionals working with children/youth, we need to understand what human trafficking is and what is happening right here in our local communities; recognize how to properly identify, handle, and report it; learn how to recognize red flags as well as children/youth-at-risk; learn how best to work with child/youth victims, and find out what professionals working with children and youth within local communities can and often do to help.

Observant and compassionate individuals have saved countless human trafficking victims; the vast majority of traffickers have a tight hold on their victims and forbid any meaningful opportunity to seek help. Of course, numerous other barriers exist as well. Recently, this usually hidden crime has been the focus of much needed attention in headlines and television. As the public becomes more aware of its existence, concern and interest are on the rise. Legislation has been passed throughout the U.S. making human trafficking a crime at the state level. On April 26, 2005, New Jersey enacted its own Human Trafficking statute, N.J.S.A. 2C: 13-8, becoming one of the first states to make this horrendous crime a first-degree offense. Until we educate ourselves, and then others, we cannot effectively fight what is believed to be the most lucrative business in the world today. Please join us. While we discuss this problem using such terms as trafficking and worker exploitation, we should make no mistake about it- we are talking about slavery in its modern manifestations. While some schemes and practices employed by traffickers reflect the sophistication of the modern world, others are basic and barbaric. Regardless of how sophisticated or simple trafficking enterprises may be, at bottom they all deny the essential humanity of the victims and turn them into objects for profit. Through this Symposium effective systemic practices and procedures for Schools, Law Enforcement, Child Welfare, Counselors and all other Child/Youth Communities to promote awareness and understanding, recognizing and reporting, proper handling and counseling and thereby prevention of victimization will be explored.

Morning Session: Our morning Presenters will address Understanding Human Trafficking; Human Trafficking in New Jersey; Identifying, Recognizing, and Reporting; Red Flags and Children/Youth at Risk and How to Work with Victims including General Treatment Strategies and Practices; and Explanation of the Fundamentals of Law Enforcement Strategies as well as the Innocence Lost project.
