We will be working with the cultural convention of collage.

Collage is an ancient art. It was used by calligraphers in tenth century Japan, and may be seen in the gold-leaf panels in European cathedrals of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as well as in the nineteenth century collagist techniques of such figures as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Source: Collage Assembling contemporary art, Black Dog Publishing What is a Collage? A collage is a work of art made by composing fragments of paper, cloth, cardboard, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, illustrations, and other printed material, and pasting them to a flat surface. "Collage" the French word for pasting, sticking, or gluing, is applied to the method as well as to the work produced.

INSTRUCTIONS

MY PERSONAL PEPEHA THERE ARE TWO COMPONENTS OF THIS ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD. THE FIRST COMPONENT IS WRITING A PEPEHA WHICH INTRODUCES YOU TO OTHERS, THIS IS TASK ONE. THE SECOND COMPONENT USES THE MEDIUM OF COLLAGE TO ILLUSTRATE YOUR PEPEHA, THIS IS TASK TWO AND TASK THREE. YOUR TEACHER WILL HELP YOU IDENTIFY THE GEOGRAPHICAL SITES IN YOUR AREA THAT YOU WILL USE IN YOUR PEPEHA.

TASK ONE: WRITE YOUR PERSONAL PEPEHA

The pepeha

In the Maori tradition when you introduce yourselves to others you would use the pepeha. Its purpose is to pay tribute to your ancestors and the area from which you originate. It may will include key geological features such as rivers and mountains and your tribal affiliation. It is traditionally spoken It may include some of the following elements.

 On A3 write you pepeha using the suggestions below. Some may or may not apply to you.

 Design your pepeha. Experiment in word with different fonts, scale and colour. When your pepeha is printed it will be used on your collage.

Ko (your name) ahau I am (your name)

Ko (name of your waka) te waka My canoe is (name of your waka)

Ko (name of your mountain) te maunga My mountain is (name of your mountain)

Ko (name of your river) te awa My river is (name of your river)

Ko (name of your tribe) te iwi My tribe is (name of your tribe)

Ko (name of your sub tribe) te hapū My sub tribe is (name of your sub tribe)

Ko (name of your chief) te rangatira (Name of your chief) is the chief

Ko (name of your marae) te marae My marae is (name of your marae)

ILLUSTRATE YOUR PEPEHA WITH COLLAGE TASK TWO: GATHER IMAGES – Appropriate images

When you appropriate an image you are using it in a manner it is not usually associated with.

 Gather images related to the geographical sites on your pepeha.

 Save copies of your images into word.

 Decide on a colour scheme, monotone or multi-coloured.

 Print the images to at least A4 in size you’ll need these for the collage.

To hand in you will need smaller copies of the images you have been working with.

 On A3 attach smaller copies of the found images you will be working with. Title this page Task Two: Found images.

TASK THREE: PROCESS – Re-contextualise images

When you re-contextualise an image you are adding meaning to the image that may not usually be associated with the image.

 Refer to the artist model resources for ideas.

 On the internet research images that reflect your interests.

 If it helps complete a brainstorm as this will help clarify what to look for.

For example

 On A3 glue the images you will use as figure forms.

 Select several figure forms, cut your geographical images into the figure forms you have found. Refer to the artist model Angus Fairhurst as an exemplar of how to re-contextualise images.

 You may wish to alter the colour of the images in word. Your teacher will demonstrate how to use this procedure.

Before you attach your images try different compositional related to the artist model Tara Reid.

Features to include in your collage;
