NYSMATYC Project ERNIE Letter of Support from Dean or Department Chair
The New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) is the oldest discipline-related two year college group in the country. (http://www.nysmatyc.org/) The NYSMATYC leadership realizes that each year long-time leaders in two-year college mathematics education find that their careers have come to an end. Often these people are replaced by individuals who lack experience in teaching and/or experience dealing with community college students. A program called Enhancing Relationships to Nurture and Inspire Educators, Project ERNIE, acts as a support group for new mathematics faculty, providing a network of colleagues going through the same experience, and mentors who are be willing to share their experiences and advice. Furthermore, participants in Project ERNIE learn about NYSMATYC as an organization; what it has done, what it is doing, and opportunities to become involved.
There is no fee for participation in this group. For all selected individuals, NYSMATYC will provide an allowance covering a) the conference registration fee for the annual conference in Syracuse in April, 2017, b) one year’s paid membership to NYSMATYC, and c) up to $100 worth of reimbursable expenses. If you have a faculty member who is in his or her first two years of full time teaching at a two year college who may benefit from this program, we are asking for your support. In a letter we would like you to:
1. Verify that the individual is in fact in his or her first two years of full time college teaching 2. Verify that the college realizes that the individual needs to be in attendance at the conference by lunch time on Friday, April 12, 2018 and he or she will be released from college responsibilities to get to Corning on time. 3. Indicate what financial support that your college may be able to provide the potential Project ERNIE participant to attend the annual NYSMATYC conference.
