Student Council Officer Mandate (SCF3) – SABBS AND SU MEMBERSHIP Student Council has the power to request a full-time or part-time officer to take action on behalf Union members. Any mandate issued must be acted upon by the nominated individual(s) and progress reported back to each Student Council until the Council deems the request to be complete.

1. This Council Notes State the facts surrounding the issue

That currently there is poor engagement from university students with the SU. For example only 53% of the student population are signed up with the SU.

2. This Council Believes State what you want the Officer to change

That for the SU to be truly representative of its students it needs to be more inclusive and needs to have a bigger membership.

3. This Council Resolves Put what the expected officer actions are

The the VPE, VPUD and President need to complete a campaign encouraging students to sign up to the SU. For this campaign to be successful it would lead to at least 65% of the student population to be signed up with the SU. This also should be reviewed by the Executive team each term minimum.

That currently Course reps do not know how to access information regarding work and or progress completed by the VP Education through the SU website.

That communication of how to find the officer report and to access the documents submitted to student council is important. It will allow Course reps to hold both Faculty reps and the VPE to account better and to have more realistic expectations of the VPE. In the past Course reps have asked for information on how to access parts of the website to be communicated through videos.

VP Education needs to create a video for Course reps so that they know how to complete the following on the SU website: -How to access the VPE officer report -How to access the Education Committee minutes, and where applicable Faculty rep reports -How to access any policies, mandates, bye-law amendments or discussion points that are education based on the website. -How to find contact details for the Faculty reps, VPE and the Student Voice coordinators.

Currently there are lots of educational concerns regarding waterside.

There have been several Q & A sessions on both campuses, however there has been no consolidation of the questions asked and the answers given.

VP Education needs to create a document which lists all of the questions which has been asked by students on waterside and then list the answers given. This then needs to be made available through the SU website.

10.This Council Notes State the facts surrounding the issue

Currently there are a few university wide educational issues that affect a large amount of the student population. These seem to occur regularly and are frequently discussed yearly at Education Committee. These usually form the foundation of the Student Written Submission (SWS), however this will no longer be used.

11.This Council Believes State what you want the Officer to change

That the VP Education along with any Faculty Reps and Course reps who wish to work towards resolving these issues should form a working group for the academic year of 2017-2018. The results from these working groups shall be published in Part B of the VP Educations officer report so that progress can be monitored.

12.This Council Resolves Put what the expected officer actions are

VP Education needs to start a working group for the following issues for the academic year 2017-2018: -Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) system. -Work Based Learning (sometimes called Placement) -Waterside communication and concerns. -Library Facilities and Academic Support services eg Learning Development -Postgraduate education related issues and support.

Any mandate issued must be acted upon by the nominated individual(s) and progress reported back to each Student Council until the Council deems the request to be complete.

13.This Council Notes State the facts surrounding the issue

That a mental health campaign was suggested at student council this year and was worked on by many throughout the year.

14.This Council Believes State what you want the Officer to change

That due to a lack of merchandise the event this year was unsuccessful however the intentions and the purpose of the campaign were correct.

15.This Council Resolves Put what the expected officer actions are

That the President, for World Mental Health day in 2018, needs to create a campaign with others highlighting the following: -the services available for students such as Nightline, Counselling, PAT’s etc -That the SU sees the person rather than the mental illness and that it is an open and welcoming community. -A petition or other form of activism to try and secure an additional counsellor due to excessive and therefore ineffective waiting times. -a video which includes the exec team as this mandate has not been completed by the 2016-2017 exec team.

This campaign should include Park, Avenue and Moulton college.
