+01 Welcome

++Chief Executive’s welcome

A warm welcome to the Summer edition of Forward. We always try to make sure the magazine reflects the real impact Guide Dogs has on the lives of people with sight loss. We support thousands of people in many different ways: our buddy dog service, which you can read about on page 18, gives young people confidence, boosting their self-esteem; our campaigns bring about changes which give people the freedom to live life on their own terms, as you can find out on the news pages; and, of course, our guide dog partnerships open up a whole new world for thousands of people across the UK.

The breadth of support we offer has increased in recent years and I’m proud that we’re helping an ever-increasing number of people in different ways. But it’s not just breadth that counts – it’s depth too. We make a point of really getting to know people, so that the support we provide is just right, and they know they’ve been listened to and heard. Sixteen-year-old Noah, for instance, “didn’t do dogs” but wanted a guide dog, so we worked hard to find him a calm, gentle dog who turned out to be a perfect match – you can read his story on page 16. Our My Guide Friends and Family training also takes into account the specific needs of real families, as Rebecca from Norfolk tells us on page 15.

It’s this attention to detail that helps us support people to live the lives they want to and achieve their goals, whether that’s getting on a bus to visit friends, or playing sport on the international stage. Welsh guide dog owners Rowena Thomas-Breese and Nathan Foy are doing just that this year (refer to page 6) and I wish them the very best of luck. Of course none of this would happen without our volunteers and, in this edition of Forward, we say thank you to everyone who took part in our volunteering survey. This is really helping us to assess what we’re doing well in terms of volunteering and where we can develop.

And, finally, I would like to say a personal and heartfelt thank you to one particular volunteer: our Chairman, John Stewart, who is stepping down in September. John has made a unique and major contribution to Guide Dogs, for which I am extremely grateful. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing John all the best for the future.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Forward and I wish you all a great summer.

Best wishes

+02 News

++Sporting pair from Wales

Two guide dog owners from Wales are making their mark on the sporting world this summer. Nathan Foy, Engagement Manager for Guide Dogs Cymru, returns to the crease when the England Blind Cricket team faces India. The top-order batsman is England’s leading run scorer. North Wales swimmer Rowena Thomas-Breese aims to repeat past successes representing Great Britain in the World Transplant Games in Argentina in August. Rowena, who has had kidney and pancreas transplants, said: “I’ve lost count of the medals I’ve won, but they don’t really mean anything – it’s more the fact I can do it.”

Included here are two photographs, one of Nathan Foy batting for England and the other of Rowena Thomas-Breese.

++Golden Forfar celebration A golden celebration this year will mark 50 years of Guide Dogs in Forfar, Scotland. On 19 July 1965, Princess Alexandra officially opened Guide Dogs’ Forfar Training School at Princess Alexandra House. And in 2008, the princess unveiled our current flagship training school. A strong bond has formed between local people and Guide Dogs, and to show our gratitude, the Training School is hosting a 50th anniversary Fun Day on Saturday 19 September. “The people of Forfar have been tremendously supportive for many years,” said Logan Anderson, Training School Manager. “The Fun Day is a big thank you to all who’ve given us such invaluable backing.”

Included here is a photograph of Princess Alexandra doing a blindfold walk in the 1960’s.

++Safe and Sound

Back in March we released some shocking new research as part of our Safe and Sound campaign, which calls for all electric and hybrid vehicles to be made audible to pedestrians with sight loss. The research showed that quiet vehicles are 40% more likely to be involved in a collision with a pedestrian than conventional cars, making them extremely dangerous to people with sight loss. We have been working with Paralympic sprinter Libby Clegg who launched a petition on change.org based on this research. This is a really important issue, so please add your support by visiting http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/safeandsound

Included here is a photograph of a lady being guided across a road by her guide dog.

++Guide Dogs’ Chairman to step down in September

Guide Dogs’ Chairman, John Stewart, has decided to step down when his term comes to an end in September 2015, as he has taken the personal decision to reduce his workload. Guide Dogs’ Chief Executive, Richard Leaman, said: “I’d like to extend our warmest thanks to John for the invaluable part he has played in making Guide Dogs the fantastic charity it is today. We look forward to maintaining links with John and updating him on our work.” Guide Dogs is now searching for another high-calibre individual, who is passionate about helping people living with sight loss, to become our new Chairman.

Included here is a photograph of John Stewart.

++Talking Buses

Earlier this year we launched a new petition as part of our Talking Buses campaign. The petition targets Great Britain’s five main bus companies - Arriva, First, Stagecoach, Go-Ahead and National Express - asking them to commit to ensuring all new buses in their fleets have audio- visual announcement systems. You can add your name online at http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/big5petition, or call 0118 9830187.

Included here is a photograph of a guide dog owner and his guide dog sitting on a bus. He’s holding a card which reads: “Make audio-visual announcements on new buses compulsory”. ++Good Food Talks

Eating out should be a pleasurable experience but it can be frustrating for people with sight loss who can’t read the menu. Fed up with having menus read to him, Matt Wadsworth, together with his wife Kate, created the Good Food Talks app.

87 per cent of visually impaired diners rely on their companion to read the menu to them. With the Good Food Talks app, menus become universally accessible, restoring people’s independence. The app gives access to more than 750 venues’ menus on the individual’s smartphone, tablet or computer in a way that suits them and their particular visual impairment.

Born blind, Matt is not just an entrepreneur but also a lute virtuoso and played at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics.

Visit http://www.goodfoodtalks.com to find out more about the app.

Included here is a photograph of Matt Wadsworth playing the lute.

++Welcoming Professor Judith Phillips

Guide Dogs does a lot of important research in all sorts of areas, including canine health and welfare, and the emotional well-being of our service users. Our research programme is vital in shaping our services, so we’re delighted that Professor Judith Phillips OBE has joined our Strategic Research Advisory Group (SRAG) as an expert volunteer. A professor of gerontology (the study of ageing), Judith has a wealth of experience in social care, the ageing process and how older people navigate their environment. Judith will be chair of SRAG, whose members include our trustees and staff, and research academics.

Included here is a photograph of Professor Judith Phillips.

++Honours all round

Two guide dog owners were recognised in the New Year’s Honours list. Sue Hopkins, 57, from London, received an MBE for services to customers and charitable services. She says: “My guide dog Petra has been completely life-changing. Everyone at Guide Dogs who’s worked with her should feel they own a little bit of my MBE.”

31-year-old David Chaffey, from Gwent, is a service user representative, supporting fellow guide dog owners. He also volunteers for many other charities and received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to the NHS, and voluntary and charitable services. ++Our mutual friend

Guide Dogs is NFU Mutual’s charity of the year for 2015, having won the insurance company’s staff vote. NFU Mutual have committed to raising at least £125,000 for us in 2015, naming puppies through the duration of the partnership. We’re looking forward to working with NFU Mutual head office and their branches throughout the UK, and helping them reach their target. Their first puppy is Henson who they’ve sponsored until he retires!

Included here is a photograph of Henson and the NFU Mutual logo.

++In brief

++ID books Most guide dog owners should have one of the yellow Assistance Dogs UK ID books to support their right to access goods, facilities and services. The book can also be used as identification for guide dog owners flying with their dogs within the UK. If you’re a guide dog owner and haven’t got your ID book yet, please contact your local Guide Dogs mobility team.

++Tributes to Cambridge chairman Tributes have been paid to Cambridge councillor John Reynolds, who passed away last November. John was well known for supporting Guide Dogs locally. He was an active fundraiser, chairman of Cambridge and District Branch and a puppy walker with his wife, Diana.

++Crossing victory in Dunstable After more than two years, campaigners finally won their battle to have pelican crossings installed at Court Drive, Dunstable. Engagement Officer Sue Rowen hosted a blindfold walk to highlight the difficulties negotiating the shared space street design.

++Stars of Sainsbury’s screen Guide dog Kandy and owner Gerry Newman made quite an impression while shopping at Sainsbury’s in Newport, South Wales. They were invited to take part in a new staff training DVD, with the store pledging £500 to Guide Dogs Cymru for their time and expertise. [End of second section]

+03 Guide Dogs in the media

++Guide Dogs in the media

ITV’s “Me and My Guide Dog” – a huge success! Millions of people tuned in to two new episodes of Me and My Guide Dog earlier in June. The programmes followed on from the original 2013 episode, exploring how life-changing partnerships are formed between people with sight loss and their guide dogs.

The two new episodes gave insights into the inspirational work Guide Dogs does to ensure that when people lose their sight, they don’t have to lose their freedom as well. Charting the progress of the adorable litter of puppies we met in 2013, they introduced some of the individuals who achieve incredible goals with these dogs by their side, including Britain’s most famous guide dog owner, David Blunkett MP.

The programmes have already generated a huge number of enquiries from people wanting to find out more about our work, to support us and become volunteers – that’s great news for us and, crucially, for people with sight loss. You can read all about the stars of the show on the Me and My Guide Dog Unleashed website at: http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/myguidedog

Included here is the “Me and My Guide Dog Unleashed” logo, which has a dog lead attached to the “d” of “Unleashed”, and a guide dog puppy pulling it.

++Other media highlights

The launch of our Safe and Sound campaign featured in national media, including the Daily Mail, Radio Five Live and BBC Radio Scotland. Read more about the campaign in our news section on page 6.

Included here is a photograph of an electric car on a road, with silhouettes of a guide dog owner and his guide dog, and a wheelchair user, about to cross the road.

The Telegraph featured Luke Cameron, who’s currently doing the “nicest job in Britain”, visiting charities across the UK to help them benefit from the services of his employer, energy broker Utilities Aid. Week six of the job saw Luke meeting seven-week-old guide dog puppies at our National Breeding Centre. He was so inspired by a young guide dog owner he met that he decided to commit to raising £5,000 to Name A Puppy.

The Daily Mirror online reported that a guide dog owner in Liverpool was left feeling too scared to leave her home independently after a dog attacked her guide dog.

Patricia Richmond told Take A Break’s 1.7 million readers how her guide dog, Preston, saved her from slipping into a diabetic coma and was ring bearer at her wedding. [End of third section]

+04 Guide Dogs Annual Awards ++Guide Dogs Annual Awards 2015

9 December 2015. Who will you nominate?

The Guide Dogs Annual Awards celebrate all that’s great about the charity, our people and, of course, our dogs.

This year, we’re delighted to be back in the glamorous surroundings of the London Hilton on Park Lane, for the Guide Dogs Annual Awards ceremony. You can play your part in this amazing event by making a nomination in any of the award categories:

++Inspirational Guide Dog Owner Award This is our headline award. It’s for a current guide dog owner (working with a guide dog since at least 1 July 2014) who’s achieved something exceptional or overcome a challenge.

Verity Smith won the award last year. Verity inspires people wherever she goes. An accomplished author, dressage rider and musician, Verity also campaigns for the rights of people with sight loss all over the world – a truly deserving winner.

Included here is a photograph of Verity Smith and her guide dog.

++Guide Dog of the Year: Beyond the Call of Duty All our guide dogs are amazing, but we’re looking for those that have taken the initiative and gone beyond their training to serve and protect their owners. The heroic behaviour must have happened since July 2014.

++Guide Dog of the Year: Life Changing We’re looking for a guide dog who has been instrumental in changing the life of a guide dog owner. In the past, winners have helped their owners take up employment, meet new people, or take up a new pastime, which has made a significant improvement to their life. The life change must have happened since July 2014.

Included here is a photograph of one of the awards.

++My Guide Partnership Award The My Guide service partners people who are blind or partially sighted with specially trained volunteers, giving them the confidence to get out and about. This award is for a My Guide partnership which has really made the most of the opportunity, demonstrating benefits for both partners. ++Young Person’s Achievement Award in association with Blind Children UK

Included here is the blind children UK logo.

Do you know anyone aged up to 25 who’s achieved great things with support from Blind Children UK or Guide Dogs? Their achievement could be at school, at work, in their home life or hobbies. Or do you know a group of young people who’ve achieved great things? Then nominate them for a Guide Dogs Annual Award!

++Collaboration of the Year Award For an individual, company or other organisation that’s worked successfully in partnership with Guide Dogs, making a valuable contribution towards improving the lives of people with sight loss. It could be a local authority, for example, or a corporate supporter.

++Breaking Down Barriers Award For an individual or organisation that has been active in breaking down the barriers that prevent people with sight loss getting out and about on their own terms, for example by improving access to shops or services, or campaigning for a change in the law.

We’re seeking companies and individuals to purchase sponsorship, buy a table or provide a “money can’t buy” prize for the Guide Dogs Annual Awards. Please e-mail our Corporate team, [email protected]

++How to make a nomination In 500 words or fewer, tell us why your chosen guide dog, person or organisation should win your chosen category. Your nomination must reach us by 9am on Monday 6 July 2015. Please give your name, address, e-mail address and daytime phone number, and those of your nominee.

You can make your nomination at http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/awards or write to Lynda Harwood, Guide Dogs Annual Awards, Hillfields, Burghfield Common, Reading RG7 3YG. For help making your nomination, please call 0870 2406993. [End of fourth section]

+05 Dogs Unite: hero on a mission

++Eight-year-old flat coat retriever Barney is on a mission to raise £2,500 for Guide Dogs. Alongside owners Jos and Bob, Barney is walking 1,200 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats, over three months. The trio set off on 27 March and aim to complete the challenge shortly after this edition of Forward has gone to press. Dogs Unite are calling superhero hounds across the UK to help Barney finish his mission on a high!

Join Dogs Unite “March a Mile for Barney” and show your support for Barney by walking a mile with your own four-legged fundraiser. Simply register online, receive your free superhero dog cape and you’re ready to help Barney fundraise.

We challenge you to raise £35 in sponsorship – enough to support a guide dog partnership for a whole week. The guide dog service receives no government fundraising, so every penny you raise really makes a difference to those living with sight loss.

To register visit http://www.dogsunite.org.uk or call 0845 6006787.

Included here are two photographs, one of Jos, Bob and Barney and the other of Barney wearing a Dogs Unite! cape, as well as the Dogs Unite! logo. [End of fifth section]

A name is the first gift a guide dog puppy receives and you can become part of their life-changing story. People name a puppy for many reasons: to remember a loved one, or celebrate a special birthday perhaps. If you Name a Puppy you get regular “Pupdates” and may even get to meet your puppy – and, of course, you’ll be helping give someone freedom and independence. Be part of something amazing. Visit [email protected] or call 0118 9830190.

++Thanks also to:

... and everyone else who’s named a life-changing puppy! [End of sixth section] +07 Snapshot features

++Happy birthday, Iggy!

Iggy, the Blue Peter guide dog puppy in training, celebrated her first birthday on 19 April.

It only seems like yesterday that smitten Blue Peter presenter, Lindsey Russell, visited Guide Dogs’ National Breeding Centre in Leamington Spa to choose and name the puppy that would join the Blue Peter family.

Since then Lindsey has followed Iggy’s progress and has been there to help Anna (Iggy’s volunteer puppy walker) at key moments throughout Iggy’s development.

A year on, Iggy celebrated by having a birthday bash at the Blue Peter studio in Salford Quays. There were lots of nice surprises for the birthday girl and a great time was had by all.

You can get an update on Iggy’s progress by following Blue Peter or reading her puppy walker’s blog on our website: http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/news/blogs/blue-peter-puppy-blog

Included here is a photograph of Iggy, with Lindsey Russell and her Blue Peter colleagues, in the Blue Peter garden. [End of seventh section]

+08 Ambassadors for a new generation

++Raising awareness of sight loss and its challenges is vital, particularly among children and young people. Our schools ambassador programme aims to do just that, and to inspire a new generation of Guide Dogs supporters.

Our schools and youth ambassadors, who are usually guide dog owners or puppy walkers, provide a unique opportunity for children to meet a guide dog. The children learn about how guide dogs are trained and why they are the everyday heroes for their owners. They also discover more about what it is like to live without sight and how they can help make their community a safer place for people who are blind or partially sighted.

The sessions are educational, inspiring and entertaining and can be held either as an assembly or for an individual class.

If you know a school that would like to meet a guide dog with its owner or puppy walker and find out more about our work, please e-mail [email protected] Included here is a photograph of guide dog owner and schools ambassador Lauren Pitt with her guide dog Goldie. [End of eighth section]

+09 Text Santa

++Santa’s two hundred little helpers

Last Christmas may be a distant memory but the phenomenal success of ITV’s Text Santa appeal has started something amazing.

Thanks to the huge generosity of people who supported Guide Dogs through Text Santa, we’re able to fund an extra 200 guide dog puppies. That’s 200 people with sight loss whose lives will be transformed by one of Santa’s four-legged helpers.

The Text Santa show took place on 19 December with a star-studded cast, including presenters Ant and Dec, and Phillip Schofield, and George Clooney appearing in Downton Abbey. Buddy dog owner Rainbow (our cover star) also featured with his dog, Drake, in a Jeremy Kyle Christmas special.

In all, more than £6.2 million was raised, shared between the six nominated charities – that’s over £1 million to Guide Dogs. Text Santa will be following 20 of the puppies’ progress and is using social media to get supporters involved – voting for their favourite names, for example.

Included here is the Text Santa logo: “TEXT SANTA (Registered) itv raising funds for Guide Dogs”.

++Steve meets Simon For one lucky guide dog owner, the night was particularly memorable as he brushed shoulders with the celebrities in the studio itself. Steve Bowles had been chosen to represent Guide Dogs for the Text Santa appeal and had already filmed an interview with Simon Cowell which was shown on the night.

Of meeting the legendary Simon Cowell he says: “I’ve never met anyone else famous so I was put in at the deep end. But after 10 minutes, it was like talking to an old friend.” Simon is well known for his love of dogs and was smitten by Steve’s guide dog May. “He made a real fuss of her,” Steve says, “and she loved the attention.” After hearing how much Steve enjoyed the X Factor – “because it’s based on listening, so I can enjoy it too” – Simon treated Steve and his wife to a weekend in London with a limousine and tickets to the X Factor final at the O2 Arena. “We were treated like pop stars!” says Steve.

Despite being thrown into the limelight, Steve says he’s just “normal, living life as I see fit thanks to May. As soon as I got her, I knew I wanted to be able to give something back to Guide Dogs.” With the success of the Text Santa appeal, and his part in it, he’s certainly done just that!

Included here is a photograph of Simon Cowell, Steve Bowles and May. [End of ninth section]

+10 My Guide

++Showing the way to friends and family

When someone loses their sight, friends and family are often keen to help. Knowing the right support to give, however, isn’t always easy.

As part of our My Guide service, we’ve introduced Friends and Family training. It gives friends and family a better understanding of the person’s eye condition and the confidence to guide them effectively. Rebecca from Norfolk talks about some of the frustrations she’s experienced and how the Friends and Family workshop has meant she’s now getting the right support from those closest to her.

“I’ve slowly been losing my sight for the last 20 years due to Retinitis Pigmentosa. I am also partially deaf. As my “sight” has declined, I’ve made changes to almost everything – my work, home, how I cross the road. My family were supportive but I needed them to stop being so “sighted” around me, for instance walking off in busy places and leaving me struggling behind them.

“I think they have felt helpless too. They didn’t know what seeing the world the way I do really means. Many of them were unsure how to help, how to navigate the sight loss issue. Should they offer help? Would they offend me if they told me about obstacles? The upshot at times was that I felt frustrated and isolated. I didn’t really know how best to teach them to help me. What changes did we all need to introduce to make my life and going blind easier?

“Then Guide Dogs came along. They provided a two-hour workshop for my friends and family, who were taught how to guide me. And they were given simulation glasses so they could see what tunnel vision was like. Now I feel more understood by those closest to me. Having a two- hour window where we all gathered together with the sole intention of making practical changes to support my vision loss was amazing. “My family and friends said they enjoyed having a space to ask questions and voice concerns. The workshop gave them the confidence to be open and to know what to do when guiding a visually impaired person. Losing your vision is much easier when those around you have the confidence to tackle the issues with you. I would recommend Friends and Family training to anyone with sight loss.”

To discuss Friends and Family training, call 0845 3727499, e-mail [email protected] or visit http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/myguide

+11 Powerful partnerships

++A guide dog in the family

A guide dog doesn’t just make a difference to its owner. It brings a new way of thinking and a new way of living to each member of the owner’s family. Two mums share their stories of life- changing guide dogs.

++Mum Claire Cooper describes a trip out with guide dog Minnie:

“Today was another first, a girly day at the cinema, alone with my four-year-old daughter Lily. We went to Derby, a new area for Minnie, but we soon got our bearings. It took us a while to find how to get into the cinema as it’s all escalators but Minnie took me to someone who showed us the way.

“Once Minnie got used to the loudness of the film, she quickly settled down. Even a mid-film toilet break was no trouble for her. She indicated each step and waited for Lily to catch up.

“I would never have attempted our trip if it wasn’t for Minnie. Now I can treat Lily while hubby is at work and she can look forward to mummy-daughter days. It’s something so simple, most mothers take it for granted, but it was really scary for me. That’s all changed now. Guide dogs are amazing!”

Included here is a photograph of Claire Cooper, daughter Lily and guide dog Minnie.

++Mum Anne Lawson describes the arrival of guide dog Campbell: “I don’t do dogs. I’m a cat person. My 16-year-old son Noah, who lost his sight after a battle with cancer, doesn’t do dogs either.

“Yet it was love at first pat. Campbell was calm and adoring. The world was about to get bigger!

“What followed was intense. By 4pm after each day’s training, Campbell and Noah were asleep in a heap, completely worn out. Yet before Noah went back to school and the start of the sixth form, they had qualified.

“Now pupils and staff stop and say hello. They use the dog as an introduction but then they spend time getting to know my son; and he’s worth knowing. Noah and Campbell go for walks together, just the two of them, and they practice the walk to the bus stop so that they can visit Noah’s dad.

“I would never have thought that life could change so much in such a short space of time. We set off to find something that might help a little with mobility and have ended up with a new and trusted family member, guide, and, can you believe it, a dog!”

Included here is a photograph of Anne Lawson, son Noah and guide dog Campbell, and a silhouette of a guide dog in harness. [End of eleventh section]

+12 People Awards

++GUIDE DOGS PEOPLE AWARDS 2015

Guide Dogs People Awards 2015

Our People Awards celebrate the fabulous contribution to Guide Dogs’ work made by our staff and volunteers. This year the Awards will be held on Friday, 23 October at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, Birmingham NEC.

We know there are hundreds of dedicated people out there worthy of a nomination, so please think about staff and volunteers you know and put them forward. There’ll be six awards for volunteers and six for staff, based on Guide Dogs’ values:

++Inclusive & embracing This award recognises the efforts of volunteers and staff to ensure Guide Dogs is open, fair, genuine and welcoming; that we are a visible and popular part of our communities.

++Maximising impact Please nominate volunteers and staff who use their skills and energy to make the biggest possible difference to people with sight loss, who always think about value for money and take responsibility for undertaking their role to the very best of their abilities.

++Dedicated to superior quality This award acknowledges volunteers and staff who take particular pride in their work and don’t settle for second best. They understand the importance of providing high quality service and always try to improve the way they work.

++Passionate & determined We all care about Guide Dogs’ cause, but tell us about the people who truly go the extra mile to get things done, and whose passion for Guide Dogs is infectious.

++Customer focused We’re all focused on supporting people with sight loss to get out and about on their own terms. This award recognises the volunteers and staff who constantly strive to provide excellent service and are never too busy to help.

++Trustworthy We welcome nominations for volunteers and staff who always deliver what they promise and don’t over-promise. These are people with high integrity who focus on positive outcomes.

The winners of these 12 awards will be those who’ve demonstrated one of these values most clearly in their work with Guide Dogs. Three overall winners will then be chosen for:

 Overall Volunteer of the Year (over 25)  Overall Young Volunteer of the Year (25 and under)  Overall Staff Member of the Year

++How to make a nomination In 500 words or fewer, tell us why your nominee should win an award, stating which value you feel they demonstrate most clearly. Your nomination must reach us by 6 July, 2015. Please give your name, address, e-mail address and daytime phone number, and those of your nominee.

You can make your nomination through our website at http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/peopleawards or write to Guide Dogs People Awards – Alice Hughes, Hillfields, Burghfield Common, Reading RG7 3YG. For help making your nomination, please call Alice Hughes on 0118 9838764. [End of twelfth section]

+13 Thanks and celebrations ++Celebrating 100 buddy dogs

Included here is a photograph of our cover star Rainbow with his buddy dog Drake.

Our small and evolving buddy dog service helps children and young people with sight loss improve their learning and development, enhancing their confidence and self-esteem.

Buddy dogs are guide dogs that haven’t qualified to work as mobility assistance dogs but can make a real difference to the quality of life of children and young people who are blind or partially sighted.

So, even if a guide dog puppy doesn’t qualify as a working guide dog, it can be carefully matched with a child or young person and still go on to change lives as a buddy dog. There are now 100 buddy dog partnerships in the UK – an amazing milestone.

++15-year-old Millie was one of the first buddy dog owners and has had Verity since 2011. Millie has a real talent for swimming. As a junior swimmer within her classification of visual impairment, she’s now ranked number one in the UK in three styles.

She says: “Having Verity has really helped boost my self-confidence and she’s a great companion too.”

+14 You spoke, we listened ++Volunteers making a difference

++To all our volunteers: thank you Volunteers’ Week, held each June, gives us a special opportunity to thank our amazing volunteers. And what staggering support they deliver! 14,000 volunteers carry out 25,000 roles and give more than 16.7 million hours of their time. So we want to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers who support us within their roles, and not forgetting the dedication they bring to events outside their roles such as Guide Dogs Week.

++Over 2,200 volunteers completed our volunteering survey. As we mentioned in the last edition of Forward, we’re exploring the difference volunteering makes to our organisation and to the volunteers themselves. As part of this, two detailed surveys were run in March, one for volunteers and one for staff. Many thanks to everyone who gave their feedback – this is incredibly useful in assessing what works well and where we need to make changes. Jacquie Wilson, a puppy walker and speaker in Greater Manchester, was the lucky winner of our prize draw. She said: “I volunteer because the more I’ve become involved the more I realise how truly life-changing guide dogs are.” We’re currently reviewing the findings and will tell you more next time. +15 Snapshot features

++Making friends around the world World travel can be daunting if you have sight loss. Set up to make independent travel possible, TravelEyes was founded by Amar Latif, who is blind himself and a Guide Dogs trustee. It’s given people like Mark Colman a new world to explore. Mark, 36, who had never stepped on a plane, started with a week in Austria in August 2012. He’s now on his ninth country, fourth continent, “and I don’t intend to stop until I’ve seen them all!” he says.

Each TravelEyes holiday features an equal number of sighted and blind or partially sighted people. Mark explains: “The people are what makes it work; sighted and blind, united in their desire to experience everything their chosen destination has to offer.”

TravelEyes also offers discounts and special offers to anyone who’s registered for Friends of Guide Dogs – our free-to-join scheme for people who have a connection to sight loss. Once you register, you’ll have access to a range of benefits, as well as an online community and invitations to take part in events in your area.

For more information, visit http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/friends or http://www.traveleyes- international.com

It gives me great faith that the future of Guide Dogs is in very safe hands!

+19 A gift and a promise ++A gift and a promise

Dave Kent’s life has been transformed not just once, but seven times already, thanks to a guide dog. Our promise is that he will continue to have a guide dog for as long as he needs one. Two out of three guide dogs exist because of the generous gifts people leave in their Wills and these gifts are a vital way of helping us keep our promise.

55-year-old Dave was born with congenital cataracts and is completely blind. Everything changed when he was partnered with his first guide dog Elma in 1979: “My world opened up from that moment on,” he explains. “My confidence was unleashed.”

Since then Dave’s passion for Guide Dogs has been hugely influential in inspiring people to support us. He’s intent on spreading the word about the difference a guide dog makes and wants other people to benefit too.

His seventh dog Quince, who Dave clearly adores, has just hung up his harness but remains a loyal companion. Dave has recently been partnered with his successor, Chad, and can’t wait to get out and about with him.

If you’d like to find out more about leaving a gift in your Will, please contact the Gifts in Wills Team on 0845 6031477 or [email protected]

Included here are two photographs of Dave Kent, one of him with Quince and one of him with Chad and Quince. [End of nineteenth section]

++Could you be a brood bitch holder? We are always looking for more volunteer brood bitch holders, who look after our guide dog “mums” in their own homes. You need to live within an hour’s drive of our National Breeding Centre, near Leamington, not work more than four hours per day, have a secure garden, and be able to transport the guide dog mum to and from the centre. For more information, please call 0845 3727432 or e-mail [email protected]
