Job Title: Warden

Salary: £7201.18 per annum, pro-rata This is a separate emolument to the Warden’s existing salary in their substantive APM or Research and Teaching position

Responsible to: Director of Student Operations and Support

Job Outline:

The Warden will provide leadership to the community in a Hall or group of Halls as set out in the main duties and responsibilities section below. The Warden shall exercise ultimate responsibility for the good running of the Hall(s), having due regard to the relevant operational policies and processes in place at the time.

The Warden will retain the normal responsibilities of their substantive role and have the status of a member of APM (Administrative, Professional and Managerial Levels 4 and above) or Research and Teaching (Levels 4a and above) staff in the appropriate department of the University.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1. The Warden will be responsible to the Head of Student Welfare for the educational, social and cultural functions of the Hall(s), for student welfare, and for good order and discipline of registered students in the Hall(s). The Warden may call on the assistance of operational staff (except staff in certain third-party-managed accommodation) in addition to the Deputy Warden(s) and Resident Tutors, to support them with this responsibility.

2. The Warden will be accountable to the Head of Student Welfare for the use of funds allocated from the ‘Student Experience’ budget.

3. The Warden will be the channel of communication between the Hall(s) and the operational departments on matters concerning services to the Hall(s).

4. The Warden will undertake disciplinary action as an officer with powers of summary jurisdiction.

5. The Warden will be consulted on the policies for developing and maintaining the infrastructure within the Hall(s).

6. The Warden will be responsible for recruiting and managing Hall Secretaries, to ensure that they fulfil their duties within the Hall(s). Additionally the Warden will recruit and oversee the Deputy Warden(s) and Resident Tutors, in the service that they provide in support of the Warden under their Tutor Agreement.

7. The Warden will be expected to provide short-term cover to other Wardens.

8. The Warden will liaise closely with the operational departments in matters relating to health and safety which is the responsibility of operational management.

9. In order to strengthen the character of the Hall(s) as an academic community, the Warden is expected work closely with student JCR representatives in promoting the educational, social and cultural life of the Hall. 10. The Warden (with the exception of those based in third-party-managed accommodation) will participate in the selection of the senior member of operational staff with direct responsibility for the Hall(s).

This job description may be subject to revision following discussion with the person appointed and forms part of the contract of employment.

Because of the nature of the work for which you are applying, this post is exempted from the provisions of Section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.
