Library Practicum 1 Processing Books From Acquisition to the Shelves

Objectives:

1. To enable students to prepare materials for use incorporating all steps from accessioning to publicizing. 2. To enable students to combine and utilize skills acquired in previous units. 3. To acquire and develop further skills which will enable students to work successfully in any library.

Activities:

1. Read through this unit carefully before beginning the activities. 2. Visit the web pages “Dewey Decimal in the UIUC Bookstacks” at http://www.library.uiuc.edu/circ/tutorial/deweyintro.html. Complete the quizzes on Cutter Numbers. Turn in something to verify you have completed the exercises. Also read “What is a MARC Record, and Why is it Important” at http://www.loc.gov/marc/umb/um01to06.html. Be prepared for this information to be on the Book Processing test.From the new and donated books, select a stack of five (5) books to process. 3. List the authors and titles of your five books in the following table. Check the cataloging system to see if the book already exists in our database or if it exists at another district library. Check to see if we have other books written by the same author in our collection. If so, you will need to use the same cutter number. Book Processing Directions

1. Assigning a Call Number

Check to see if we have another copy of the same title in our library. If so, assign the same call number with the c.2, or whatever copy it is. If it is the same edition, only the price and bar code number will be different when entering data into Follett’s cataloging system.

If it is a first copy, assign a call number. The call number will be assigned from the DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification) book and the Cutter Table of author numbers, with the help of the librarian. Your call number must be approved by the librarian before typing labels and entering data into the cataloging system.

2. You will then need to find the MARC record for each book. If our library already has a copy of this book, then the MARC record is already there. If not, you will need to add a Title to the Cataloging System. Under the “Cataloging” tab in library administrative software, select “Add Title” then type in ISBN number to perform a search for the item. Once you have found the record, select SAVE to add the record to our local database.

3. Prepare New Books for Circulation

Open new books in a special manner to protect the spine and longevity of the life of the book. Hold the book with the spine on the table. Press the front and back covers down to the table while holding the pages upright. Press open a group of pages at the front and then the back, pressing your hand down the seam from top to bottom of the book. Repeat this until all pages have been done. Report any uncut or missing pages to the librarian.

4. Type Labels

Prepare labels for your books following the examples provided on the sample page. Label templates can be found saved in the 10-11 LPI folder on the student drive. Make sure you save your labels. You will need the following labels: spine, pocket, book info label, and barcode. After your labels are ready, ask the librarian to check them BEFORE printing and before you place them on your books.

Place the spine label exactly 2” from the bottom of the book.

Place the book pocket label on the top of the pocket and paste the pocket on the inside back cover, centered, unless there is an illustration or important information printed there. In this case, find the closest blank page to the back cover and place the label there.

If you have a paperback book, you must wrap the book before placing the book pocket on the last page.

If your book has a book jacket, then the book pocket will need to be placed on the second to last page, since the book jacket will cover more than 2/3rds of the last page. Place all labels on the book jacket before wrapping. Place the barcode on the upper left-hand corner of the front cover with the number facing outward.

Place the small number from the barcode on the bottom of page 13.

4. Security Strip

Apply a single “Tattle Tale” security strip inside the book on page 13. If you are not sure how to do this, ask the librarian/library aide.

5. Book Jacket Covers / Paperback Laminating

If there is a book jacket, enclose the jacket in a clear mylar cover according to the directions on the mylar materials. Most paperback books that are cataloged for circulation will be laminated. Check with the librarian to see if your book is an exception to the rule. Read the instructions as well as watch the demonstration by the librarian to learn how to apply a plastic laminate to paperback books. 6. Ownership Stamps and Numbers

Using the stamp with “Warrensburg High School Library,” stamp your book in the following places: Title page, upper right-hand corner Page 13, bottom right-hand corner Top and bottom edges of the book pages
