Before Reading 1. Who are Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon Bonaparte? (Use an encyclopedia or the internet to find out information on these two people.) 2. If you were asked to travel to a faraway place that no one had been to before how would you feel? 3. What are some of the items important to you, that you would want to take on this journey? 4. What qualities do you think a person must have in order to be willing to go to a new place with limited supplies and less information? 5. Use a dictionary to help you define the following: ceded, treaty. ratified 6. Go to the following website and read about the Louisiana Purchase http://www.gatewayno.com/history/LaPurchase.html and answer the following: a. What is the Louisiana Purchase? b. Why did Jefferson want it? c. Why did Napoleon want to get rid of it? d. The area that the Louisiana Purchase covers land in nearly 14 states. Click on the US map in the article to get a larger and more detailed view and name at least 10 states that this piece of land involves. (Remember, this territory was not yet states at the time of "the purchase.")
