Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time October 24, 2010
One of the nicest compliments that can be said about someone is that he or she has their feet on the ground. It implies that they are in touch with reality, not having an exaggerated opinion of themselves or of their accomplishments. A person who has his/her feet on the ground is someone you can trust. The word humility comes from the Latin word "humus" meaning earth or ground. Being humble means having your feet on the ground, knowing who are you and who you are not. God creates us from the earth and to the earth we will return. A person who is humble lives life aware of their dependence on God. We can do nothing apart from him.
When we pray to God, we are not seeking to impress Him with what we do. Rather, prayer acknowledges that we depend upon God and are in need of His mercy. What makes us great is not how much we love God and do for Him, but how much He loves us that enables us to do anything or be anything at all.
Next Sunday’s Readings: Wisdom 11:22-12:2; 2 Thessalonians 1:11-22; Luke 19:1-10
Parish Prayer Chain
The parish has a prayer chain for those who are struggling with illness-physical, mental and emotional. If you or someone you know is experiencing these difficulties, you can simply call Blanche Howze at 410-566- 6046 or Frank McGloin at the rectory. If you would like to be part of the prayer chain you can call either Blanche or Frank. No request is too small and each one is very important. We do not always see the difference our prayers make, but we know in faith that God hears and answers all prayers in His own way.
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The parish would like to offer a formation course for anyone interested in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This is not only a wonderful way of introducing scripture and the sacraments to the very young; it enhances the spiritual journey for those participating adults. The young child comes to us already having a spiritual knowledge that surpasses our understanding. As we echo God’s Word they return it to us in ways that touch our hearts and deepen our faith. The course is taught by Anna Mae Guida and assisted by Alex Daley. It will be offered in two segments beginning on November 12th through the 15th 2010 in Finksburg, MD. (We will carpool from the Catonsville area.) The cost for the 90-hour course is $400 per person with $200 payable at the beginning of the first segment; the balance will be due at the start of the last segment in late spring. Please call Mary Roney 410-788-8363 or Sharon Kerr 410-566-0877 for more information.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, the tax collector’s prayer allows God to be God and so allows God to pour mercy into his heart. When we pray and give alms to the poor, we allow God’s mercy to be poured into their hearts. Through your gift to the Society of St.Vincent de Paul you also can give God’s mercy to your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless, alone and frightened.
