FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER MRS. HOLLINGSWORTH’S CLASS

READING: We will be working on the following skills: compound words; ending -dge letter/sound; r controlled words=er, ir, or, ur, ar; digraphs ch, sh, th, wh; the two sounds of ow; letters/sounds of qu; following directions; sequencing; str letters/sounds; oi and oy words and sounds; the three sounds of ea; recognizing and reading dialogue; using punctuation while reading; comprehension; and context clues; relating pictures to text and acquiring experience in locating and using reference materials.

LANGUAGE : Recognizing and using punctuation for dialogue; editing skills; writing a complete sentence; following written directions. HANDWRITING: We should finish them soon and I will send them home.

MATH: Telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour; reinforcing 2-digit subtraction with regrouping; identifying a quarter, dime, nickel, penny; counting money; and making change. The math curriculum reviews a lot of different skills on a regular basis. We do many of the pages together as a class. We have completed Journal 1 and we are working in Journal 2.

SCIENCE: We will begin learning about Solids & Liquids. The experiments are so much fun. Your child gets to rotate to three other classes on Wednesdays to do more experiments. The kids love it!!!!

SOCIAL STUDIES: We continue to learn about Great Americans/People! The kids have loved learning about Ben Franklin, Wright Bros. Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart, Galileo, Betsy Ross, Paul Revere, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Sacagawea, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Alexander G. Bell, Martin Luther King, Jr., Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo, Thomas Jefferson, and Marie Curie

DATES FOR YOUR FEBRUARY CALENDAR:  3rd=Donuts with Dad  13th-17th=Box Top collection is this week!!!!  14th=Second Grade Valentine party 2:00-2:45  20th=No school for kids, Professional Day for teachers  21st=Kids will enjoy a puppet show that emphasis how to deal with bullies.  23rd=Late Start Day…school starts at 10:40 am **JEE is trying to “Go Green”, please help us by reading the emails.
