Dear Professor XXX

I am writing to apply for the position of assistant professor announced in Job Openings for Economists. I will complete my Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics in May 2004 at the University of California at Berkeley. I have a strong background and research interests in applied International Economics and Open Economy Macroeconomics.

My dissertation research is on the international debt of developing countries and international financial crises. In my main job market paper, ``Bonds or Loans? On the Choice of International Debt Instrument by Emerging Market Borrowers,'' I show that borrowers' creditworthiness is a main determinant of their choice of a debt instrument. I have extensive teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate level, both as a teaching assistant and as a lecturer. At the graduate level, I assisted professors DeLong, Jones, Obstfeld and Romer in teaching a course in Macroeconomics.

Enclosed is a copy of my resume, my job market paper and a copy of the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award. The Berkeley Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics will send letters of recommendation under separate cover. I will be attending the AEA Meetings in Atlanta and would be pleased if we could arrange to meet for an interview. I can be reached at (510) 290-9613 or via email at [email protected].

I am extremely interested in your department and I have the skills and interests to make an immediate contribution to it. I am glad to have had this brief chance to present my work to your program and look forward to an opportunity to meet with you in person.

Sincerely, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY
